The Train in Trades Culinary Arts Program is taught by Chef Frank Abbinante and provides students the unique opportunity for secondary students to earn graduation credits and industry certification in “Culinary - Cook Level 1 Technical Training”.

This program provides a unique opportunity for secondary students to earn graduation credits and industry certification in Culinary – Professional Cook Level 1 Technical Training. It enables participating students to acquire the job-ready skills required to enter the industry, or to pursue further training in this area of specialization. There are many opportunities in the hospitality/tourism industry.

This core program is the first step to achieving entry level certification in preparation for beginning an apprenticeship in the culinary industry. It provides education and training in the fundamentals of food preparation including safety and sanitation, equipment operation, and basic food service skills.

Students who complete both the theory and practical components of the program will write the “Professional Cook 1” certification exam.

Students in this program will be enrolled in four (4) cook training courses in their second semester (usually in grade 12). Students will also participate in a minimum of 120 hours of work experience and/or apprenticeship at a local restaurant. This Culinary Arts program is a wonderful opportunity for students to really experience all the skills, training and excitement of the world of cooking!
