Help Fight Blindness (Upcoming Volunteer Opportunity)

Move For Sight is an annual fundraising event for Fighting Blindness Canada, to raise funds and awareness for vision research, treatments, and education, brining hope to those experiencing vision loss.

This year's Move For Sight 2026 Ambassadors (Vancouver locals!), are working hard to make sure this event is a huge community success. We need your help to ensure the event runs smoothly and safely for all involved.

What does a Move For Sight Event Day Volunteer do? A variety of roles are available:

  • Registration - help sign in participants, collect fundraising forms and money
  • Route Marshall - be the cheerleader/encourager while ensuring participants stay along the marked path
  • Refreshments Monitor- ensure everyone stays hydrated before/after their 'move' activity
  • Activities Zone - games, colouring, yoga, etc - help explain/encourage game play and activities available
  • Set up/Tear Down - everyone pitches in to get the stations set up before the event officially begins, and we all work together after

Our ideal volunteer is over 16 (or has a parent/guardian supervising); enthusiastic, compassionate and willing to learn about the vision loss community. We welcome all volunteers to tell a friend, coworker or sign up together as a small group (up to 5).

I am a member of the Coquitlam Cheetahs Track and Field Club. Every year we run a Track Meet for athletes across the province as well as The  Provincials Track Meet, we are always looking for volunteers.

Our Cheetah Meet is on Sat. 30th and Sun. 31st May. We are looking for high school students who can volunteer their time and earn community service hours. Our days count for 8hrs of volunteering and students would be fed throughout the day. Students do not need to have any experience as we have many BC officials who know all the rules but need help.

Volunteers measure jumps/throws, rake the sand pit, put up the bar in high jump etc!

The Provincial Track Meet is Fri.3rd - Sun.5th July.

I am hoping this is something you can promote in your school and point students in my direction.

I am contacting you from Mayfair Retirement Living.     We had the great honor to be guests at a party put on by your students, the Winter Waltz and they were wonderful hosts!

We are reaching out to see if you may have any students needing some volunteer hours, in particular we hope to find some volunteers to come on Saturday afternoons.    We have a regular game of Bingo and other recreation activities going on, and truly we love to be around the energy and enthusiasm of young people.

At Mayfair, student volunteers do not have to complete a criminal record check due to their age     They would also always be under supervision  of staff at all times.

Thank you

My name is Kay Simon, and I'm the Camp Manager at Camp Byng, located on the Sunshine Coast near Roberts Creek, BC. I'm reaching out to share a leadership opportunity that may be of interest to students.

This summer we are offering a Leadership in Training (LIT) Program for youth ages 14–16 designed to help young people build confidence, develop leadership skills, and gain meaningful experience working with younger campers in an outdoor setting. Participants in the program will also earn 40 volunteer hours, which can be applied toward school graduation requirements.

The two-week program combines leadership development with hands-on experience. During the first week, participants focus on building leadership skills such as communication, teamwork, activity planning, and problem solving while taking part in classic camp experiences like archery, hiking, and team challenges.

During the second week, participants apply what they've learned by supporting camp staff and helping lead activities for younger campers, giving them real experience in mentorship, teamwork, and leadership.

I've attached a Leadership Program flyer with additional information, along with a general Camp Byng flyer that highlights our summer camp programs.

If you have students who may be interested, we would greatly appreciate you sharing this opportunity with them.

You can learn more about the program and register here: https://www.scouts.ca/camps/camp-byng.html?

I'm reaching out from the Regional Animal Protection Society (RAPS) to ask if you would be willing to share an upcoming volunteer opportunity with your students.

RAPS is hosting several community fundraising events in February and March, and we are hoping to recruit high school students who are looking to earn volunteer hours while supporting a local nonprofit and a great cause.

To kick off 2026, RAPS is launching our annual Car Lottery and 50/50 Raffle, featuring a brand-new 2026 Nissan Leaf generously donated by our largest sponsor, Applewood Auto Group (for the third year in a row). The donated vehicle will be displayed at shopping centres across the Lower Mainland, and volunteers help by engaging with the public and raising awareness of RAPS' rescue and community programs.

This is a fun, meaningful, and accessible way for students to:

  • Earn volunteer hours
  • Support animal welfare in their community
  • Build confidence and customer-service skills

Students are welcome to volunteer with a friend or family member. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Brief training is provided a few days before the event.

**We are planning to bring adoptable kittens to these events also**

⚠️ Important Commitment Notice

Shopping centres require that a minimum of two volunteers remain with the vehicle at all times. By signing up, volunteers are committing to attend their entire shift, as on-site replacements are not available and the car cannot be left unattended.

The local newspaper is back

As you may know, four longtime local journalists who worked for the Burnaby NOW, New Westminster Record and Tri-City News have launched a new publication to fill the local news void left when those publications closed in April.

Freshet News has been online since October covering education, local politics, community events, school sports and more.

We are a non-profit community service co-op with the sole aim of publishing reliable local journalism, the bedrock of healthy democracies and a key way to bring communities together.

On Dec. 18, we will publish our first print edition, a big undertaking, but one we're incredibly excited about.

Key role for students

We'd like local high school students to be part of this important initiative by volunteering to hand out copies of the paper at local SkyTrain stations.

Beyond earning work experience hours, students would be supporting the local community by making people aware of this new source of reliable local information now available to residents.

Students would also be getting hands-on experience in what it takes to get a start-up venture of any kind off the ground.

As a co-op we value local connections, and we feel getting local schools and students involved is a win-win, on this project and for the future.

The plan

A minimum of two students would be assigned to each SkyTrain station on a first-come, first-served basis.

On Dec. 18, students would attend their assigned station between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

Bundles of the paper would be delivered to them. (Anyone who can drive and pick up bundles from our distribution hubs could earn extra work experience credit.)

Students would hand out copies of the paper to people leaving the station. Copies that are not distributed would be picked up by us at the station.

The work, though not complicated, would have an important community impact, and could evolve into further Freshet News work experience opportunities in the future.

If you are looking for an opportunity to earn some volunteer hours, or want to come spend some time in the forest air, join us for our Big Help event on Thursday October 2nd, from 4:00-6:00 pm! We will be picking up garbage around the forest (with a focus on cleaning up the riparian area around Como Creek), and digging out blackberry roots from our restoration area. We will supply all necessary tools, but feel free to bring your own work gloves and extra garbage tongs if you have them. And remember to dress for the weather - we will be working in the forest primarily, so it might get a little chilly.

Please feel free to bring friends and family, the more the merrier. We just ask that everyone register for the event by selecting the date on our event calendar, here: https://freshroots.ca/volunteer/. If you are under 18 you will need a parent/guardian to assist with the registration; if you have any questions or concerns about this registration process, please let me know!

The Port Moody Soccer Club Adaptive Soccer Program volunteer opportunity.

Port Moody Soccer Club is looking for volunteers for our Spring season that runs April - June.  Ideally this would be students in Gr. 11 or 12. No soccer experience necessary!

I have been the Director of the Adaptive Program since we started 8 years ago.  We were the first club in the Tri-Cities to offer this type of program for neurodivergent children who may or may not have physical disabilities, and who want to play soccer but might find our mainstream pathway challenging. Our Volunteers work 1:1 with players to support them in whatever way is needed, in order to foster a love of the game and develop skills to the best of everyone's ability.  We have players with a variety of challenges, from autism to sensory/motor skills, to auditory/processing challenges, and more.  Without a program such as this, many of these kids wouldn't have the opportunity to play.

Our practices are held at the new Bob Favelle Field in Port Moody, every Friday from 6:30-7:30 p.m.  Not only are we looking for volunteers, but if there are families in SD43 who might benefit from having their child take part in our program, please share our program information with them, or have them reach out to me for more information.

Regards,

Teri Shaw - Adaptive Soccer Program Director

My name is Ali Azizi, and I was a high school student at Riverside Secondary school until I graduated in 2023.

Recently, I have gained the opportunity to teach Introductory python to students at Summit Middle School, and I hold weekly classes every Thursday for 8 weeks, starting this week on January 16th

It would be very helpful to have a volunteer to help with handing materials out and helping students set up. Anyone who helps will get a certificate recording their volunteer hours which can be helpful for their graduation requirements.

Could you please notify the students of this opportunity, and see if anyone is willing to help? This opportunity is somewhat urgent, and I need a volunteer by Thursday January 23rd by the latest.

The Vancouver International Children's Festival will be returning this spring with a live Festival, on Granville Island May 26–June 1, 2025

We are inviting students to volunteer for the Children's Festival, thereby gaining valuable skills and experience while fulfilling their Work Experience curriculum requirements. Students interested in Hospitality, Tourism, Event Management, Arts, Performance, or Childhood Education are particularly encouraged to apply, but there are positions at every level. Volunteers can sign up starting on January 2nd on our website. We ask our volunteers for a minimum two-shift (14 hr) commitment.

We are especially interested in onboarding a few Key Volunteers right away, who can begin working within your school to recruit and screen more volunteers. There can only be 3 Key Volunteers per school. KVs generally work around 20 hrs in advance of the Festival, and then transition into Crew Captain roles onsite during the Festival. Serving as a KV and/or Crew Captain provides very strong leadership and communications experience, plus being creative and fun. Any Volunteer who completes over 30 hrs of service will receive a personal reference letter from the Festival.

If you are keen, outgoing, and well-organized, and think you would be a strong KV candidate, please contact to us at the childrensfestival.ca website for more info and to submit an application. Our Volunteer Coordinator will interview any KV candidates, and will arrange an online meeting for the first group of KV's in February.

You can find lots of info on the website, and this neat little video about the Festival.

The Challenge starts at the base of the Coquitlam Crunch at the Scott Creek Community Gardens and the full loop (up and down) of the Crunch trail is approximately 4.4km, taking the average person (walking) anywhere from 1 to 1.5 hours. The Coquitlam Crunch Diversity Challenge offers something for everyone whether you are a hardcore athlete, or you just want to get out in nature and exercise alone or with your family or friends.  All ages and abilities are welcome.

STAIR MASTER

The Stair Master challenges athletes to see who is the fastest running up the 437 stairs of the Crunch

THE 8KM RUN

Are you ready to conquer the new exhilarating 8km run? Runners of all skill levels can come together and test their endurance and embrace the spirit of healthy competition.

MAKE IT OR BREAK IT

The Make It or Break It category challenges athletes to see how many times they can go up and down the full length of the Crunch within 4-hours;

RECREATIONAL

The Recreational category simply encourages everyone to come out and support the community, get some exercise, enjoy the day and try to complete the Coquitlam Crunch at least once or even twice in 2 hours. You have the option to be time-chipped so you can see how you did.

AWARDS/AGE GROUPS (Stair Master and Make It or Break it): Gold, silver and bronze medals in four categories (male/female) 16- 24 years; 25-44 years; 45-59 years and 60 or over will be presented before 9 a.m

The Coquitlam Crunch Challenge: Embracing Diversity

On August 29, 2010 starting at 6 am, Coquitlam resident and Safe Harbour co-ordinator Alexander Bell began to climb up and down the popular hiking trail, the Coquitlam Crunch, as many times as he could in one day, after teaming up with the Coquitlam Foundation to launch a Diversity Initiative Fund for Coquitlam. Bell’s goal was to raise $10,000 over five years so that the fund would begin to generate enough interest to start distributing annual grants within the Tri-Cities. That goal was achieved in 2015.

“My vision for the future is to have people representing every diversity group to join me in the Coquitlam Crunch ‘Diversity’ Challenge.”

To date, over $35,000 has been raised for the Community Diversity Fund (held and administered by the Coquitlam Foundation) which provides grants to Tri-Cities’ individuals, non-profit organizations, or community groups initiating actions, programs or education aimed at improving integration and participation by diversity groups, identified by the community as being socially or financially marginalized.  The fund now generates a yearly diversity grant of $3000.

There are volunteer opportunities for the local high school students in the area. Currently we are looking for people to volunteer during the upcoming May Day festival in Downtown Poco on May 11th. We will be at a tent during the event handing out prizes and providing resources about the BC legislature. This volunteer opportunity allows for students to engage with the wider community and learn more about the BC Legislature. Additionally, students that are unable to make the May Day festivities but still wish to volunteer should contact us as our office attends several events though out the year and are always welcoming of extra hands. The amount of hours at each event will vary but should last a minimum of 4 hours.

We welcome any students who want to learn more about politics, help out in the community, or have a keen interest in the provincial government. Our office is considered non-partisan, and is focused more on governmental proceedings rather than party politics. Volunteers should still be aware though they are representing a NDP MLA and need to be respectful to all peoples.

We are a non-profit that has been providing outdoor-based camps for ages

5-12 and other programs in the Tri-Cities since 2019. Our goal is to empower and inspire youth and create community. We are always looking for kind, patient, and respectful people to volunteer. We hope that our strongest volunteers eventually become staff.

Our activities at camp include swimming, boating, active games, sports, table games, arts and crafts, talent shows, and more based on the interests of participants. Our out-trips include places such as White Pine Beach, Rocky Point, Crash Crawly's (when heavy rain is forecast), and pools, parks, and playgrounds throughout the Tri-Cities.

If you know of anyone you'd recommend who is looking for a fun place to get volunteer hours or potentially explore a future career, we'd be grateful if you shared our non-profit with them. Our volunteer application forms are on our website at www.RFcamps.com in our Volunteer section.

My name is Charisse and I work for the City of Port Coquitlam. We used to have a Snow Angels program where people would help seniors and those with physical challenges shovel snow from their driveways, walkways, and / or sidewalks. Sadly, this program collapsed a few years ago. As our baby boomers are our largest demographic, there is an increasing demand to revisit this. I have recently received a couple of requests from people in need of this service. One is an 86-year-old lady who lives alone, and the other is a 76-year-old man who can no longer manage a snow shovel.

Thank you both for your responses. Adding this opportunity to your website would be fantastic! Here is the contact info for the two seniors who are in need of help when the snow comes:

  • Lena Suchi (86 years old, lives alone). (604) 941-9032.
  • Douglas Diamond (76 years old, unable to manage a snow shovel). (604) 942-4439.
