Planning 10 is a required course for graduation that runs all year, backed with PE 10. The units of study include:
- Job Search Skills (employability skills, cover letters, résumés, interviews, employment standards, and work safety)
- Career and Education (interests, aptitudes, skills, and career research; post-secondary options and requirements)
- Financial Awareness (budgeting, banking, credit, student loans, rental agreements, identity theft, and internet fraud)
- Healthy Living (nutrition, stress management, sexuality, road safety, substance abuse, physical activity, and healthy decision making)
For the past five years, Planning 10 students in SD43 have participated in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative. Students learn about social issues in our community, volunteerism, and charities while developing their employability skills. In groups, they choose a charity to research and visit. They make presentations to their class and each class picks the best presentation to go on to the school's finals. A panel of students picks the winning group who then recieves a cheque for $5,000 from the Toskan-Casale Foundation to donate to their charity. Riverside Planning 10 students have been able to donate $25,000 to local charities who address the needs of people in our community.
