Riverside offers several opportunities for students interested in learning another language. Students in the
French Immersion program study several core courses and electives in French. Other language options are
Core French,
Spanish and Italian including courses for beginners.
Riverside's wealth of digital resources provides a rich learning environment for the language learner. We have access to many on-line resources, Skype in the classroom, and teacher web sites. Student use of laptops is encouraged! The modern languages department encourages participation in school activities such as our foreign film nights, Night Market, Animé club, French play and Cinqo de Mayo celebrations.
Many post-secondary schools require students to have credits in a second language course so students should consult with their academic advisor or the career centre. However, in addition to meeting post-secondary requirements, learning a second -- or third -- language teaches students to take risks, opens their minds to other cultures and builds their confidence with stronger communication skills.
There are many opportunities for summer or school year exchanges in additional to school trips where students can practise and improve their language skills. Students should talk to their counsellor, teachers and career resource teacher if they are interested in these opportunities to enrich their language skills.
