The Student Services Department of Riverside Secondary School provides both direct and consultative service to students with special needs and the staff that support them. As well, the department works with families and community agencies.
The Student Services Department offers support under the umbrella of special education in an inclusive school environment. Students served by school-based support services are those who require an individual education program. They have a wide variety of learning needs. These needs may include, but are not limited to: visual, hearing, physical or chronic health impairments; speech and language disorders; learning disabilities; behavior disorders; intellectual disabilities; as well as those students with below average academic potential and/or social emotional difficulties.
The aim of Student Support Services is to build students’ self esteem and confidence in a professional, caring and non –judgmental environment. The department is committed to maintaining a learning environment that encourages all students to take an active role in their academic success, empowers them to reach their highest potential, and promotes the development of positive social skills. The ultimate goal is to encourage students to take ownership in the process of achieving their educational goals and become caring and responsible citizens.
