The first Montessori class in Coquitlam was established at Austin Elementary School in 1979. The Montessori classrooms in School District #43 (Coquitlam) differ not so much in "what is taught" but "how it is taught" and the materials used.
Coquitlam Open Learning
Open Learning encompasses two programs. A program for K-9 students and a grade 10-12 program. Our courses are fully accredited by the Ministry of Education and there are no charges for students to take these courses. The K-9 program is open to all students who want to learn in an alternative environment. The grade 10-12 courses are open to students who need to make up credits, want expanded curriculum offerings, more flexible scheduling options, specialized courses that some schools may not be able to offer or even students who want to get ahead.
The Social Responsibility site provides lesson plans, activities, announcements, professional development opportunities and links to other websites with themes of social responsibility, social justice and social/emotional learning.
Transition programs are designed to help students explore careers while still in high school and move seamlessly to post secondary.
