Fraser River Discovery Centre in New Westminster is introducing a new volunteer youth program. They are looking for youth wanting to commit volunteer time at the FRDC to gain valuable work experience and complete volunteer hours for graduation. Volunteers must be 15 years of age or older and should have a desire to work with children and families.

Summer Camp Assistant:

Under the direction of the FRDC Education team, you will perform a range of duties at the FRDC, all

designed to connect summer campers with the Fraser River Basin!

Responsibilities:

• Provide campers with a fun, interactive, and memorable experience.

• Assist with summer camp activity preparation and set-up.

• Facilitate/lead summer camp activities.

Time Commitment:

• Summer Camp Volunteers are required to complete a minimum of 60 hours over the course of

8 weeks (from July to August).

Public Programs Assistant:

Under the direction of the Volunteer Coordinator and Public Engagement Manager, you will facilitate

interactive public programs geared towards children and families.

Responsibilities:

• Enhance visitors' experience with registered or drop-in public programs.

• Lead visitors in interactive learning activities.

• Engage with the community and promote the FRDC’s role in connecting people to the Fraser

River.

Time Commitments:

• Public Program Volunteers are required to complete at least 80 hours from September to June.

You can choose the days you volunteer, as we understand that flexibility is important to achieve

school/life balance.

Special Olympics is a global organization offering sports training and competitions for individuals with intellectual disabilities since 1968. Special Olympics BC – Coquitlam is home to more than 200 athletes and 150 volunteers.  We offer a wide range of spring and fall sports, including: 5-pin bowling, 10-pin bowling, swimming (including learn to swim), figure skating, speed skating (including learn to skate), floor hockey, rhythmic gymnastics, snowshoeing, alpine skiing, curling, basketball, soccer, softball, athletics, bocce, and golf.

 

Roles / Positions: Volunteer Assistant Coach or Program Volunteer for one of our various sports in Special Olympics Coquitlam. 

Time Commitments: 1 hour per week at a practice with a set time. (see Program Schedule below for sports and times)

Volunteer position description: Volunteers would be helping our athletes of all ages in their organized sports. Volunteers don't need to be particularly skilled at a specific sport, but would do well with some knowledge and background. Volunteer Assistant Coaches help the Head Coach with all duties; assist with training and supervision of athletes at practices and (occasionally) competitions; and regularly communicates with Head Coach. Assistant Coaches must be 16 years of age or older. Program Volunteers must be 14 or older. Volunteers can join at any time.

Program structure and calendar: Both Leadership One and Two will work through ten weekday sessions.

Volunteer Hours Both of Sasamat’s leadership programs are a great way to gain volunteer hours with both Sasamat programs and local community-based initiatives. Participants have the opportunity to volunteer with many Sasamat programs such as our April day camp weekend or spring break youth programs. What:

  1. Key Volunteers - require right away in onboarding who will begin recruiting and screening volunteers within your school. KVs work 20 hrs in advance of the Festival, and transition into Crew Captain roles onsite during the Festival. Serving as a KV and/or Crew Captain provides very strong leadership and communications experience, plus being creative and fun. Any Volunteer who completes over 30 hrs of service will receive a personal reference letter from the Festival. See Ms Chau if you are interested to sign up as KVs.
  2. Volunteers during the Festival - Students interested in Hospitality, Tourism, Event Management, Arts, Performance, or Childhood Education are encourage to apply. Volunteer can sign up now on the Festival's website for a minimum two-shift (14 hr) commitment. Online application will open in the new year. Sign up early to get into the better shifts, i.e. Saturday & Sunday shifts.

Do you like gardening? Do you want to help a disabled individual? If your answer to both are YES, this volunteering opportunity is for you.

DIGA is currently very in need of volunteers to help out with our clients who have physical disabilities in gardening. The time commitment would be around 1.5 hours biweekly or as needed. Some volunteers volunteer each week, others don't. The time commitment will depend on the gardeners' needs and schedule. Most shifts are daytime weekday shifts.

The season continues until fall, so it is an excellent opportunity for the summer. DIGA can be a particularly useful experience for students interested in healthcare (ie physical therapy), sustainability, community, and mental health/psychology. Place des Arts has many volunteer opportunities for youth and adults throughout the year. From working with children at art camps or helping at exhibitions, events or performances to sitting on our Board of Directors, we provide meaningful ways to get involved in the arts and contribute to the community.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be over the age of 13;
  • All applicants must attend an interview. Place des Arts will contact applicants to arrange interviews as applications are received;
  • Complete reference and criminal record checks. Volunteers over the age of 18 are required to complete a criminal record check.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities

  • Community Events: Place des Arts participates in a variety of events out in the community, as well as at our centre. Volunteer duties include assisting with children’s art activities, setting up, cleaning up and more.
  • Children’s Art Camps: Camp volunteers gain exposure to a variety of classes in the arts. Duties include supervising children and assisting teachers in classes. Camps are offered during select Pro-D Days, Spring Break and summer.
  • Galleries & Exhibitions: Volunteers assist with hanging artwork in our galleries and at opening receptions for our art exhibitions.
  • Ushers: Volunteer ushers collect tickets and welcome guests at concerts, recitals and events.
  • Classroom & Workshop Assistants: Volunteers assist teachers with distributing supplies, helping students as needed and cleaning up.
