SD43 students currently enrolled in grade 10 are eligible to apply.
Overview
COAST 11 is a five month district Outdoor Education Program for grade 11 students. A cohort of 24 students from around the district are brought together, in their first semester of grade 11, to learn using the natural world as a classroom. The program is an inquiry based learning experience. Students are immersed in active exploration, discovery, problem solving, and self-discipline. No matter the activity, emphasis is placed on preparation, care, and respect. Our aim is to enable students to choose wisely from among their choices, initiate action, and take personal responsibility for who they become. Once a student has successfully completed their COAST semester they will have earned credits in English 11, Social Studies 11, Active Living 11, Outdoor Education 11, Leadership 11, and Environmental Science 11.
Interested students need to complete an application package. Students will bring the application with them to their COAST 11 interview; these packages will be available at the information session and there is a link below with an electronic copy of the appication. The application will require a home school counsellor and administrator signature of support. COAST 11 interviews will be held before and after school during the week of March 6 -10. Families will contact our main office to book their COAST 11 interview time slot. The students will have a 10 minute interview with our staff and there will be follow up with referees if necessary. The expected cost for each participant is $950. Successful candidates will be cross-enrolled between our school and their home school. The student will attend Gleneagle for the fall semester for COAST 11 and return to their home school for their second semester of grade 11. Please be aware that for programming purposes, the students will need their math 11 course in their second semester; as well as any of the more traditional science 11 courses, and second languages etc.
