Dear SD43 families,
In June of this year, the federal government announced a new annual statutory day to commemorate and honour those who were lost, the indigenous survivors, and the families and communities who continue to grieve, as a result of the residential school system in Canada. Recognizing this historic tragedy and the ongoing trauma is an important step toward reconciliation. This new federal statutory day is called Truth and Reconciliation Day and will be held annually on September 30th.
The Ministry of Education has informed BC school districts that on September 30th, 2021, schools will be closed to honour this day. As a result of this information, SD43 schools and sites will not be in session and 2021-2022 school calendars will be adjusted to reflect this change.
We wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable end to the summer.
Sincerely,
Patricia Gartland
