In anticipation of Provincial approval and funding for an elementary school on Burke Mountain in the Smiling Creek Neighbourhood, School District No.43 would like to ask you to fill out this survey so we can receive your suggestions and feedback regarding the development of the Neighbourhood Learning Centre (NLC) for this school.
*Please note that the name of the school is still to be determined but will be referenced as Smiling Creek Elementary for ease of communication.
Pending Provincial Ministerial approval, NLC space in Smiling Creek Elementary* will comprise 15% of the total square footage. The idea is to find unique and innovative ways to design schools with both school and community use in mind. School District No.43 has been working collaboratively with the City of Coquitlam since this site will be a Joint Use site. The City has committed to building and maintaining the field for school and community use. The City will then have access to some of the interior school facilities for after school and evening use. NLC programming could include: programs and clubs for parents and children, sports and recreation programs, or arts and cultural programs to name a few examples. The intent behind this initiative is for the school and the community to partner together to create opportunities where people can access educational and community programs under one roof. Some specific examples that have been included previously in our district are: enlarged curriculum spaces for classroom and community learning, enhanced gym facilities, community offices, and meeting spaces.
To gain a better understanding of community needs, we are circulating this survey to determine how best to bring together community services and the school community.
