Janice Pang is among 12 of Canada’s Top High School Scientists

July 21, 2016

Janice Pang, a grade 11 student at Pinetree Secondary School, is among twelve of Canada’s top high school scientists that have been selected by Youth Science Canada to represent Canada at the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) on May 10-15 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her project, miRNAs as biomarkers of IAPP-induced inflammation in type 2 diabetes, looks at microRNAs and its potential to be attractive early biomarkers of type 2 diabetes. In previous years, Pang has competed at the 2012 and 2013 Canada-Wide Science Fair. She won a gold medal and the top health award for her age category in both these competitions for her projects, Pre-exposing RAW264.7 Macrophages to Microbial Product, PAM3CSK4, and Inflammation in Pancreatic Islets: Contribution of Islet Macrophages. In April, Pang will also be attending the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair at UBC.
