Basketball in all forms has been prominent at Heritage Woods Secondary. For the past two weeks, students in PE classes and intramurals have giving wheelchair basketball a whirl leading up to a friendly match against the Port Moody Police that took place as part of the Kodiak Klassic.
The wheelchair basketball events were organized by Grade 12 student Thomas Venos. Thomas was paralyzed at the end of Grade 10 in a motor bike accident but demonstrates incredibile resiliency every day. Organizing the events is part of his Independent Study Course in Business Management. Thomas has his eyes set on a scholarship to Alabama University to play either tennis or basketball.
The Kodiak Klassic, the annual AAA basketball tournament launched in 2010, runs from December 1 to 3, 2016 with games hosted at Heritage Woods Secondary and Port Moody Secondary. The tournament features 16 schools including SD43 schools Heritage Woods Secondary, Port Moody Secondary and Terry Fox Secondary.
