Learning for a Lifetime
Literacy Centres

Literacy Centres

The Literacy Centres provide intense intervention in  reading for students who are below grade level and continue to struggle despite continuous, intensive, and targeted support from their home school.  Schools determine which students are suitable candidates for the program based on the provided criteria and complete the application.

The focus is on the development of word level reading skills and comprehension for students experiencing significant difficulty with decoding, phonological awareness, and phonics.

Literacy Centre classes will have small groups up to 8 students who will attend 90-minute sessions each morning or afternoon for one 10-week term (Fall, Winter or Spring). Students who are selected to attend the LIteracy Centre will be in class at their home schools before or after their Literacy Centre class each day.

The Literacy Centres will service students in Grade 2 and an additional Centre will service students in Grades 4/5 and Grades 6-8.

Students may need to travel to attend the Literacy Centre at a neighbouring school, but all considerations will be made to make the travel time as short as possible.  Schools will collaborate with families to arrange transportation if necessary.

Applications are accepted in May for the following school year.
