Junior Firefighter Programs
Coquitlam Fire Rescue: March 15 - 22, 2024β (first week of Spring Break)
Port Moody Fire Rescue: April 18 - 21, 2024 (plus a few days before/after)
The Coquitlam School District is very excited to partner with both Coquitlam Fire Rescue and Port Moody Fire Rescueβ to offer two different firefighter acadeβmies this year! It is open to SD43 high school students currently in grades 11 and 12.The Junior Firefighting Programs will give the applicants a true understanding of the basic components both physical and educational of Fire Rescueβs basic training for new recruits. The educational component will test the applicantβs knowledge learned in the classroom of firefighting equipment, fire behaviour, the fire tetrahedron and the products of combustion, to name a few. The practical component of the program will test the applicantβs strength, endurance and teamwork skills. Some examples may include: dragging charged hose lines, carrying ladders in a group, climbing the four-story hose tower and cutting up cars in teams using the βJaws of Lifeβ.The Coquitlam academy will be accepting 12 students and will run for 8 days (9β.00am to 5.00pm) at the firehall located at 1300 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam.The Port Moody academy will be accepting 4 students and will run for 4 days (8.00am to 6.00pm) at the firehall located at 150 Newport Drive, Port Moody. There will be a few more days before/after attached to this academy, those will be updated later.Students are able to participate in one of the two offering mentions above.There are three phases to being accepted:complete an "application"βit is a fillable .pdf, so the expectation is that students will type in as much of the application as possible, really only needing a pen for signatures and datesβpass a "fitness test", andpass a "personal interviewβ"The β2024 application will be posted on November 1, 2023 (and due back in early December 2024).

EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY - 'Headstart in Art'September 13 - December 13, 2022
This "Foundation Drawing Studio" course (FNDT 112) will be available to students going into their grade 12 year (or current grade 12s who will graduate on June 30 and would like to take this course as a "recent grad") from any of the secondary schools in School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) and surrounding area. The course will carry degree credit at Emily Carr and transfer credit to other Fine Art programs. The course is particularly aimed at students considering post-secondary studies in visual art, media art or design.An Emily Carr instructor will teach the course on Tuesday evenings (6.00pm - 9.00pm) at Gleneagle Secondary School (room TBAβ).βThis course explores the fundamentals of drawing such as line, shape, tone, texture, volume, proportion, shadow, space, composition, scale, mark-making tools, and media. Exercises and projects work on perceptual and expressive drawing and hand-eye βcoordination. In-class projects and homework assignments will encompass various aspects of drawing while visual presentations and class discussion will introduce students to contemporary and historical ideas of art and design.βThe applications packages are available on our website and with your Post Secondary Career Advisor. It will be advertised at your high school and on this webpage.

From physical conditioning and self-defense tactics, to scenario-based simulations and firearm safety, youβll receive from police the most up to date tactical training.You will learn about the many different aspects of policing from exciting guest speakers. Meet members of the K9 Unit, see the police helicopter β Air 1 up close, and get out on the water with the NWPD Marine Unit.βSee link in right column. ββStudents are responsible for dropping of completed applications to the ββNew Westminster police station. Camp Ignite is a four-day camp that educates and inspires young women to follow their dreams.βThe camp is open to British Columbia girls in grades 11-12 (ages 16-18 ), and gives them an introduction to the world of firefighting. Aside from firefighting, each participant will learn about fitness, nutrition, health and teamwork.ββ See helpful links in the right column.βββββββββThe next Camp Ignite runs from August 10-13, 2023.
