Coquitlam Fire/Rescue Junior Firefighter ProgramMarch 11 - 18, 2022β
The Coquitlam School District is very excited to partner with Coquitlam Fire/Rescue to offer its third Firefighter Academy! It is open to SD43 high school students currently in grades 11 and 12.The Junior Firefighting Program will give the applicants a true understanding of the basic components both physical and educational of Coquitlam Fire/Rescueβs basic training for new recruits. The educational component will test the applicantβs knowledge learned in the classroom of firefighting equipment, fire behaviour, the fire tetrahedron and the products of combustion, to name a few. The practical component of the program will test the applicantβs strength, endurance and teamwork skills. Some of these are: dragging charged hose lines, carrying ladders in a group, climbing the four-story hose tower and cutting up cars in teams using the βJaws of Lifeβ.This 8-day firefighting program runs daily from 9β.00am to 5.00pm.(lunch and snacks provided).There are three phases to being accepted: β"completed (fillable .pdf) βpaper application", "fitness test" and "personal interviewβ". A student must successfully complete all if they are to be one of the 12 Coquitlam studentsβ to participate. EMILY CARR UNIVERSITY - 'Headstart in Art'September 13 - December 13, 2022
This "Foundation Drawing Studio" course (FNDT 112) will be available to students going into their grade 12 year (or current grade 12s who will graduate on June 30 and would like to take this course as a "recent grad") from any of the secondary schools in School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) and surrounding area. The course will carry degree credit at Emily Carr and transfer credit to other Fine Art programs. The course is particularly aimed at students considering post-secondary studies in visual art, media art or design.An Emily Carr instructor will teach the course on Tuesday evenings (6.00pm - 9.00pm) at Gleneagle Secondary School (room 107β).βThis course explores the fundamentals of drawing such as line, shape, tone, texture, volume, proportion, shadow, space, composition, scale, mark-making tools, and media. Exercises and projects work on perceptual and expressive drawing and hand-eye coordination. In-class projects and homework assignments will encompass various aspects of drawing while visual presentations and class discussion will introduce students to contemporary and historical ideas of art and design.βThe 2022 application is now available (see link in right column) and is due by May 25, 2022 in order to be considered for the September 2022 intake.

From physical conditioning and self-defense tactics, to scenario-based simulations and firearm safety, youβll receive from police the most up to date tactical training.You will learn about the many different aspects of policing from exciting guest speakers. Meet members of the K9 Unit, see the police helicopter β Air 1 up close, and get out on the water with the NWPD Marine Unit.βSee link in right column. ββStudents are responsible for dropping of completed applications to the ββNew Westminster police station. Unfortunately the July 2022 intake has been cancelled due to CoVid... ideally they are hoping to run it in the summer of 2023.
