Students and parents are strongly encouraged to research this trades training opportunity to ensure it is the correct trades program for their career and educational goals. It is taught at the post secondary level (to provincial and national certification standards), so expectations are set higher than a normal high school class.


Time Commitment

  • 1 intake:  early January (first week back after Christmas break)
  • 23 weeks long‚Äč
  • 5 days a week:  Monday to Friday
  • 7.00am to 1.30pm

Student Eligibility

  • students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
  • students must begin a program prior to June 30 in th‚Äčeir graduation year
    • ex 1:  a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student‚Äč to participate in
    • ex 2:  a program will begin in January‚Äč after a grade 12 has graduated the previous June ‚Äč- this is not okay and that current grade 12s should not apply as they will not be accepted
  • unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students" ‚Äč‚Äč

Student Cost

  • tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $400 for course materials, textbook, resources, etc

Location‚Äč‚Äč & Transportation

  • BCIT "Burnaby Campus" - 3700 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby
  • Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian
    • Skytrain is the best transportation option
      (Skytrain to Brentwood Mall, transfer to bus‚Äč)


  • plan to complete Language Arts 12
  • good literacy and numeracy skills
  • excellent attendance + lates record while in high school

  • passion for working with heavy metal and welding
  • attention to detail

Application Process/Steps

  • inside each trade, the SD43 application is a link in the right column, near the top
    • open up an application forand save it to your desktop 
      ‚Äč(must do this first to fill in correctly)

      • student types in answers/responses‚Äč directly into the fillable .pdf
  • pri‚Äčnt off a completed ap‚Äčplication and get all necessary signatures (p. 2)
  • submit the completed application to your school counselor
    • students - feel free to contact Doug MacLean at any time
  • personal interview will happen (ideally within a few weeks of submission) 
  • students are accepted into programs in mid/late May - notified by email 
    • counselors will adjust timetables accordingly‚Äč‚Äč‚Äč
