Electrician

Occupation Description: 
Construction Electricians plan, design, assemble, install, alter, repair, inspect, verify, commission, connect, operate, maintain and decommission electrical systems. Electrical systems provide heating, lighting, power, alarm, security, communication and control in residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, marine and entertainment environments.​ 

Application Process/Steps

​November 1 - (pre) Spring Break
    • look over all th e information below and in the right column - get a good
       understanding of the pre-reqs, expectations, time commitment,    reading, math, training, etc
      • if you have no questions, please apply for the program(s)

    • student competes the SD43 application (top link in the right column)
    • submits to your high school counselor (usually in gr 11 for the gr 12 school year)  
(post) Spring Break - late April
    • personal interview/conversation with district coordinator 
mid-May into June
    • students are conditionally accepted (or not) into programs (notified by email) 
    • applicable enrolment at the training site is made (by district coordinator)
    • counselors will adjust timetables accordingly for following school year

Time Commitment
  • 1 intake​: for the 2022-23 school ​year, this program will be running for all of semester 2 (January 30 - June 28, 2023). ​Traditionally, it has run in semester 1, but the instructor is on a leave during this time.
  • 5 days a week - 8.20pm to 3.00pm

Student Eligibility

  • limited to 18 students
  • students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
  • the Ministry of Education has allowed grads to apply, but they must:
    • understand that first priority is given to a student applying for it for their grade 12 year... "grads" would be on a waiting list, to start​
    • talk to their counselor well in advance (early January of gr 12 - course selection time)
    • talk to the district coordinator well in advance (early January of gr 12​)
    • complete a 'transition plan' (see district coordinator)
    • have a plan of action​ between June (grad) and Feb (start of sem 2)
      • ex: take Auto 12, work in an auto shop, upgrade math skills,...
  • must have government-issued photo ID that is current/valid on the ​ITA exam date in late January (ex: a driver's license, BC ID, or passport)​

Student Cost

  • tuition-free, but students wi​ll need to pay $350 for program materials and textbook. Please note: this is a $50 increase from last 2020-21 school year, as the price of metal, wire and wood have all increased significantly over the past year.

Location & Transportation

  • Dr. Charles Best Secondary​
  • Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian

Pre-Requisites

  • completed all grade 11 core subjects, including:
    • ​Physics 11
    • Math 11:  Foundations (C+) or Pre-Cal (C+) or Workplace (B)
    • any Tech Ed 10 or 11 course
  • excellent attendance + lates record

Skills + Attributes

  • ability to work individually, and as part of a team
  • patience and accuracy
  • love of all things electrical in new home construction​
