École Mary Hill Elementary held a special event on Thursday, October 6 where they unveiled their new school mural.
Invited guests at the event included members of the Kwikwetlem band, members of the Aboriginal Education Department, parent volunteers, Trustee Kerri Palmer Isaak as well as the entire staff and students of the school.
The mural was the culmination of a project that took place over the last year and involved students, teachers, parents, and SD43 Aboriginal Education teachers.
The mural exemplifies the tenets of the First Peoples Principles with the whole community coming together with patience and time to create a piece of art that "supports the well-being of the self, the family, the community, the land, the spirits, and the ancestors."
"One of the key pieces of the mural is the school motto "Learn to Live-Live to Learn" being translated into "Down River" language with the assistance of the Kwikwetlem and Musqueam bands.
