SD43 Summer Learning a success for summer learners

August 30, 2019

School District 43 Summer Learning Program boasts yet another successful year in providing engaging learning opportunities for students over the summer holidays.

SD43's 2019 Summer Learning program was a huge success with over 7,000 course registrations, 300 more than in 2018 for grades 1-12 courses offered at 9 elementary, 3 middle, and 2 secondary school sites.

This year SD43's Summer Learning Program added a new summer school site in the Burke Mountain area, Smiling Creek Elementary.  New secondary course offerings included Basketball/Leadership 8/9/10, Financial Literacy 9/10, and Introduction to Media Arts 9/10.  Also new was the Environmental Science 11 course.  This was a six week full-time program in partnership with Fresh Roots, a non-profit organization, that offered grade 10 and 11 students opportunities to learn how to grow, cook and sell food while earning course credits.

Summer school students, families and staff also celebrated their efforts in collecting 2288 lbs of food items and over $1400 cash donations to SHARE Society and used sporting goods to the Kidsport this summer.

Congratulations to all students enrolled in the Summer Learning Program 2019!

Thank you to the many teachers, education assistants, clerical staff and administrators who made summer learning another wonderful experience for many SD43 students!  Special thanks also to the 36 high school and adult volunteers who worked in our summer classrooms.

Mr. Peters, Principal of the SD43 Summer Learning Program says, β€œThe success of Summer Learning would not be realized without the tremendous commitment and energy of the four hundred employees that worked in this year's program.  This year's summer students gained new skills and experiences, much needed course credits, and new friendships.  We look forward to offering an exciting line-up of programs in summer of 2020."
