Aspenwood Elementary Water Challenge raises over $8K for WE Charity

June 27, 2017

AspenwoodWaterChallenge-web.jpgOver 200 students at Aspenwood Elementary were provided with a unique learning opportunity while raising funds for WE Charity by participating in a Water Challenge on June 9.

The grades 4 and 5 students at the school experienced firsthand the challenges that many in developing or third-world countries go through in order to receive clean, safe drinking water by performing a challenge similar to what children in some of those countries are tasked to do multiple times each day.

A child in a developing country will often be tasked with trekking miles up to a dirty river and lug 40 lbs. cans of water back to their families up to five times a day.

The Water Challenge saw students carry two 4L jugs of water (approximately 18 lbs.) back and forth across the school field for 35 minutes. Lap times were recorded after the challenge.

Prior to the Water Challenge, students collected pledges from family and friends for either an amount per lap, or an overall amount.

A total of $8703.80 was raised for WE Charity which will go specifically towards aiding in building wells and creating sustainable options for villages in developing countries.

Aspenwood Elementary aims to make the Water Challenge an annual event at the school.
