SD43 and TELUS unveil student-designed artwork in Port Coquitlam

June 22, 2017

School District No. 43 (Coquitlam), in partnership with TELUS, proudly unveiled six student-designed artwork pieces being used as graphic wraps for six TELUS electrical boxes in Port Coquitlam. The winning students, their parents, school staff, school district trustees and district leaders, City of Port Coquitlam dignitaries, and TELUS staff were on hand for the unveiling and celebration.

The six designs were selected from numerous entries received through a competition held in May that was open to SD43 students in middle and secondary schools in Port Coquitlam.

The winning designs were contributed by Elaine Xiao (Kwayhquitlum Middle), Kaylin Verbeek and Taylor Chow (Minnekhada Middle), Izabela Fabbro (Citadel Middle), Bonita Shao (Citadel Middle), Jacob Gillis (Terry Fox Secondary), and Tsai-Ni Lin (Terry Fox Secondary).

The teachers and student artists that were involved expressed their thorough enjoyment in being part of the competition, and the students, and their parents, were beaming with happiness and pride when the winners were announced and the designs were  unveiled.

Students had to create an original design that not only met TELUS technical requirements but also connected with a ‘Canada 150’ theme. The designs are wrapped around electrical boxes at key locations near six SD43 schools in Port Coquitlam. The wraps will further beautify Port Coquitlam while helping to minimize graffiti.

In appreciation for the designs and effort by many students and staff at SD43 on this collaborative project, TELUS also generously donated $5000 to SD43 to be used for technology needs at the four participating schools. TELUS also surprised the winning students by announcing they will each receive a new iPhone 7.

“Having student artwork displayed on electrical boxes in Port Coquitlam not only showcases the talented work of SD43 students but also serves to beautify the community around our schools,” said Kerri Palmer Isaak, Chair, Board of Education for SD43. “We are very grateful to partner with TELUS on this and for their generous donation towards technology.”

“At TELUS we live by the philosophy to give where we live, and we believe that our investments in community are just as important as our investments in infrastructure,” said Roberto Aiello, TELUS Director of Customer Solutions Delivery. “One result is what you see around your community today. In celebration of the creative and artistic abilities of the youth in this community, we’ve wrapped the boxes with beautiful artwork created locally by Port Coquitlam students.”
