Montessori

Maria Montessori was a physician who combined an interest in child development and educational theory with her study and practice of medicine. The first Montessori-based classroom opened over seventy years ago and since then the Montessori method has become well established in Europe and throughout North America.

Montessori Teaching Philosophy
The Montessori philosophy places an emphasis on individual student choice in learning and a balance between whole class lessons and individual lessons

Montessori Integration into Curriculum
The first Montessori class in Coquitlam was established at Austin Elementary School in 1979.

How to get involved
In 1983 a liaison committee was formed to provide a communication link between the district, the schools and the parents, and it has been an active component of the growth of the program.

When can my child start?
School aged children can enter the Montessori program in the September of the year they turn 5 years old.
