Counselling

Services Description

Elementary counselors provide counselling and consultation service to the school (or schools) in which they are based.

Children may be referred by the School-Based Team, parents or other professionals regarding academic, social, emotional or behavioural concerns. Written parental consent should be obtained before the counselor undertakes ongoing counselling.

Counselors can provide liaison with outside agencies such as Ministry for Children and Families and Children’s Hospital. Where possible, counselors will assist with implementation of recommendations from outside agencies to the school setting.

They can be involved in facilitating the articulation of students with special needs through a transition to another level (e.g., elementary to middle, middle to secondary), with school transfer situations, or the screening of students for district program placements.

Counselors may provide direct in-service activities at the school on topics related to educational, social, or emotional aspects of children’s development.

Referral Process

Referrals for service are usually initiated through the School-Based Team of which the counselor is an integral member, or at the parent’s request. Written parent consent should be obtained.
