Electrician

Our district partners with Camosun College to offer TUITION-FREE trades training to students who are hoping to gain their level 1 technical training as an Electrician.


PROGRAM CONSIDERATIONS: 
Students, and parents, are strongly encouraged to research this trades training opportunity to ensure it is the correct trades program for their career and educational goals. 

Time Commitment

  • 1 intake:  September (ending in late January)
  • 5 months long
  • 5 days a week
  • 8.20pm to 3.00pm

Student Eligibility

  • students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
  • the Ministry of Education has allowed students to take this program after graduating, but they must:
    • understand that first priority is given to a student applying for it in his/her grade 12 year... "grads" would be on a waiting list, to start​
    • talk to their counselor well in advance (early January of gr 12 - course selection time)
    • talk to the district coordinator well in advance (early January of gr 12​)
    • complete a 'transition plan' (see district coordinator)
    • have a plan of action​ between June (grad) and Feb (start of sem 2)
      • ex: take Auto 12, work in an auto shop, upgrade math skills,...
  • must have government-issued photo ID that is current/valid on the ​ITA exam date in mid-June (ex: a driver's license, BC ID, or passport)​

Student Cost

  • tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $300 for course materials and textbook

Location & Transportation

  • Dr. Charles Best Secondary​
  • Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian

Pre-Requisites

  • completed all grade 11 core subjects, including:
    • ​Physics 11
    • Math 11 Found​ations
  • excellent attendance + lates record

Skills + Attributes

  • ability to work individually, and as part of a team
  • patience and accuracy
  • love of all things electrical in new home construction

Application Process/Steps

  • ​SD43 Applications are available usin​g the link near the top in right column
    • ​consider applying at least 8+ mo​nths in advance of an intake​
  • submit fully completed applications to high school counselor
  • district coordinator will do pers​onal interview at high school
  • successful candidates will be cross-enrolled at Dr. Charles Best and timetables adjusted​
