Cabinetmaker (Joiner)

Occupation Description: 
Cabinetmakers build, repair, finish and install residential and commercial cabinets (including hardware), wooden furniture and architectural millwork using a variety of woods, laminates, and other products. Cabinetmakers read drawings and specifications and prepare layouts. They also set up and operate woodworking equipment, both power and computerized, to machine wood products and composite materials. Cabinetmakers use various hand and power tools, and precision woodworking tools to perform their work. Insome ​shops, cabinetmakers sand and finish the surfaces either beforor after assembly. They also apply finishing products. Some may choose to specialize in areas such as stairs, veneering, sporting equipment, musical instruments, moulding, or finishing. 

Application Process

November 1 to Spring Break

    • student completes the fillable "SD43 Application" (top link in the right column) by typing in answers and getting necessary signatures
    • submit to your counsellor at your high school

after S​pring Break to late April

    • Personal interview/conversation with Ben King at your school

​​mid-May into June

    • Ben King will:
      • email students conditional acceptances into the program
        • unsuccessful applicants will also are contacted
      • enroll the student at the training site(s)
      • ​​​ensure counselors adjust students' timetables to reflect course/credits
Time Commitment
  • 3 intakes:
    • ​Oct 10, 2023 - Apr 12, 2024
    • Feb 26, 2024 - Aug 16, 2024
    • ​Apr 15, 2024 - Oct 4, 2024
  • 25 weeks (no Spring and/or Summer Breaks​)
  • 5 days a week:  Mo​​nday to Friday
  • 7.30am to 2.00pm

Available Seats

  • BCIT has set aside 2-3 seats of the 16 available, for each intake, to all students in the Lower Mainland. It is competitive, but Coquitlam has been quite successful in getting a seat(s) for qualified students.

Student Cost

  • tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $600-1,000 for course materials, textbook, college fees, etc... variance in cost is due to students may or may not want to purchase their projects

Location​

  • BCIT "Burnaby Campus"
  • Skytrain is the best transportation opt​ion (skytrain to Brentwood station, then transfer to bus)... if you drive, parking is about $6/day

Pre-Requisites

  • Woodworking 11 and Woodworking 12
  • good literacy and numeracy skills
  • excellent attendance + lates record while in high school
  • ability to stand on your feet for extended periods of time

Student Eligibility

  • students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
  • students must begin a program prior to June 30 in th​eir graduation year
    • ex 1:  a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student​ to participate in
    • ex 2:  program will begin in August after a grade 12 has graduated - that current grade 12 should not apply as they will not be accepted​
  • unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students"
