Welder
Occupation Description:
A Welder is a person who has training in and is capable of welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals in all positions, on both plate and/or pipe, using various welding processes. Certified welders qualify for testing with CSA, Technical Safety BC and for ASME procedures in British Columbia.
Application Process
November 1 to Spring Break

- student completes the fillable "SD43 Application" (top link in the right column) by typing in answers and getting necessary signatures
- submit to your counsellor at your high school
after Spring Break to late April
- Personal interview/conversation with Abraham Kang (District Coordinator) at your school
mid-May into June
- Abraham Kang (District Coordinator)will:
- email students conditional acceptances into the program
- unsuccessful applicants will also are contacted
- enroll the student at the training site(s)
- ensure counselors adjust students' timetables to reflect course/credits
- email students conditional acceptances into the program
Pre-Requisites
- Metal/Welding 11 andMetal/Welding 12
- or have related experience in the trade
- plan to complete English 12 (given intake, probably 'online')
- good literacy and numeracy skills
- excellent attendance + lates record while in high school
- ability to stand on your feet for extended periods of time
Student Cost
- tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $600 for course materials, textbook, resources, etc
- Students might be eligible to do some additional welding certificates near the end the program - these are optional and these costs are NOT covered by the district. Students who wish to attempt these certifications will have to pay for it/them on their own.
Location & Transportation
- BCIT "Burnaby Campus" - 3700 Willingdon Avenue, Burnaby
- Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian

(Skytrain to Brentwood Mall, transfer to bus for final stretch)

Intakes & Time Commitment
- intakes for 2023-24 school year:
- Sept 25 - Apr 12 (note: this is full)
- Nov 20 - June 7
- Jan 15 - July 26
- Mar 4 - Sept 13
- Monday to Friday... start times will vary, depending on the intake date (7.00am, 12.30pm or 2.30pm)
- 28 weeks long (no Spring and/or Summer Breaks or Pro-D days)

Student Eligibility
- limited to 1-2 Coquitlam SD43 students per intake
- students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
- students must begina program prior to June 30 in their graduation year
- ex 1: a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student to participate in
- ex 2: a program will begin in August after a grade 12 has graduated - that current grade 12 should not apply as they will not be accepted
- unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students"
