Selection is based on demonstrated leadership skills and/or additional responsibilities. Examples are:

„ Plays a major role in supporting their family, financially or otherwise
„ Letter of recommendation from school district
 for form 'D', this should be a teacher, counselor or coach from their school that can speak on behalf of them on these points

​Graduating grade 12 applicants must:

  • Show passion for the technology sector, involvement in the tech community, and desire to leave a mark in the future of technology;
  • Be accepted into a publicly funded or private BC-based post-secondary educational program beginning in 2026*;
  • Be a permanent resident, landed immigrant or Canadian citizen; and
  • Have a minimum 3.4 GPA.

* Graduating Grade 12 students who have not yet received a letter of enrolment are still eligible to apply. Once shortlisted, proof of enrolment will be required by 31 May 2026.​

Eligibility 

 

  • A BCGEU member in good standing, or related to a current, retired or deceased BCGEU member or staff; and 
     
  • A student or prospective post-secondary or higher learning student enrolled, registered or planning to attend an eligible educational institution in 2026. 

 

[1] Eligible relatives include spouses, (same or opposite and common law spouses); parents; and children and grandchildren (including foster, adopted, and stepchildren and step-grandchildren). 
 
[2] Eligible educational institutions must be recognized by Employment and Social Development Canada. A list can be found here.

 

Previous BCGEU scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply. 


2026 BCGEU Indigenous Scholarship Eligibility (please check the deadline to apply)

For the purpose of this scholarship, an Indigenous person (the legal term is Aboriginal person) in Canada, as recognized in the Constitution Act, 1982, is a person who identifies as First Nations (Status/Non-Status), Métis, or Inuit. 

 Indigenous identity data is collected solely to determine scholarship eligibility.

You must provide one of the following: 

  • a copy of your Secure Certificate of Indian Status, or

The Theatre Society Legacy Fund – Arts Education Bursary is intended for a student enrolled at a CRA-recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or internationally in a formal arts program anywhere in the world. Arts is defined as a creative activity that expresses imaginative or technical skills. It produces a product or an object. The product/object of art is called a work of art for others to experience. It includes drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, digital art, performance art, dance, music, poetry, prose, theatre, and culinary arts.

The First Citizens Fund Student Bursary Program provides financial awards to Indigenous students enrolled in post-secondary education. Bursaries up to a maximum of $1,200 per funding cycle are awarded to students who meet all eligibility requirements and who demonstrate significant financial need. Students apply for the bursary after they successfully complete a semester of post-secondary school.

The David Lam/ BC TEAL English Language Learner Scholarship Award is for a refugee who has shown courage and determination while adapting to a new language and culture in Canada. It is valued at $4,000.

The David Lam/ BC TEAL English Language Learner Scholarship Award recognizes an English language learner graduating from a BC secondary school who has combined academic competence with school and community service, and who wishes to further his/her education at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia.

Please note that applicants for the David Lam/BC TEAL English Language Learner Scholarship must be documented permanent residents or citizens of Canada. International students on student visas are not eligible for this award.

Each of the refugee awards is awarded to a refugee who has shown courage and determination while adapting to a new language and new culture in Canada. Each refugee award is valued at $4,000.

Each of the TCF refugee awards is awarded to an applicant who meets the following criteria:

  • Studied English as an additional language since arriving in Canada

The 2025-26 contest closes at day’s end on June 10, 2026.


Students must create and submit the following two items to enter the scholarship contest:

A one or two paragraph introductory document that explains why you chose to apply for Valour Canada’s History and Heritage Scholarship (.doc or .pdf format please). This will not be evaluated.

A YouTube-compatible video between four and six minutes long that educates viewers about your chosen memorial, monument, or place (see the question below). Your video should open with a still screen title page that includes: the video title, your name, your town/city, and your school. Your video should close with a still screen showing your references (as per Chicago-style formatting requirements). Your video should not have music.


The Essay Question:

Visit a local Canadian war memorial, monument, or important place in military history. Describe it, then compare and contrast its historical context with your opinion of its current meaning. Finish with some commentary about the role of Canadian war memorials in the 21st century.

Your response should reference at least two of Valour Canada’s six pillars of character (communication, cooperation, courage, responsibility, resilience, thoughtfulness).​

The B.C. Excellence scholarship is awarded to 55 high school graduates who have demonstrated service and leadership, both at school and in their communities, and who show aptitude for and commitment to their chosen career or area of post-secondary study.

Each school may nominate only one student.

Note: students may apply for both the B.C. Excellence scholarship and the Pathway to Teacher Education scholarship but they can only be awarded one.

The Capilano Community Leadership Entrance Award recognizes BC high school students with documented leadership and volunteerism in the community and demonstrated strong academic standing. Valued at up to $2,500 towards tuition and tuition surcharges, twenty of these awards are offered each year to BC high school students with a maximum of one student per school, per year.​

1.​. All Capilano Community Leadership Entrance Award applications require a completed nomination statement from a BC High School Representative.
2. Representatives may complete as many nominations as desired; however, only one student per high school may receive an award.

The Commitment Scholars Award celebrates and recognizes demonstrated leadership in, and commitment to, racial justice, social justice, or diversity initiatives by a student in their high school or in their community.

National Scholarships are designed to recognize all-round excellence. They are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic performance to candidates who demonstrate ability for creative and innovative thought and a passion for the pursuit of learning. National Scholarships also recognize exceptional achievement in extracurricular activities such as the arts and athletics. A special emphasis is placed on a candidate's commitment to community service through ongoing contributions to school and community life.


 Each school is able to nominate up to 4 students for the National Scholarship Program (note: a school can nominate 1 additional student (in addition to the 4) if that student is an international (visa) student).  Schools are not nominating students for a specific scholarship.  The nomination is for the student to be considered for the scholarships available within the National Scholarship Program.

  • General eligbility requirements require applicants to:
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrate a history of school and community service and leadership OR school and community involvement
  • Demonstrate academic success sufficient to enter into post-secondary studies
  • Begin designated studies within three years of formal notification of awarded bursary/scholarship
  • Submit a written report upon completion of the applicable term of studies
