Opterus Helen Rose STEM Award - $5,000

To apply for the Helen Rose STEM Award, you must be a woman between the ages of 18-26 and plan on pursuing an education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) at an accredited Canadian university or college. The student we are looking to fund is pursuing a field of study that will help them in the future to create or contribute to a new mindset for a better world.

Example programs: Nursing, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, etc.

Opterus Valerie Ann Arts Award - $5,000

To apply for the Valerie Ann Arts Award, you must be a woman between the ages of 18-26 and pursuing an education in the Arts at an accredited Canadian university or college. The student we are looking to fund is pursuing a field of study that will help them in the future to create or contribute to a new mindset for a better world.

Who can apply?

Eligible applicants must meet all the following conditions:

  1. Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  2. Be enrolled in an accredited college or university in British Columbia or Alberta. Funding will only be awarded for post-secondary studies in current or future academic years. Bursary funds may not be used for tuition costs for courses already completed or expenses accrued prior to the date of application. 
  3. Be a person with significant physical disabilities and/or ongoing health challenges, such as someone who:
    • requires a personal attendant
    • is dependent on a mechanical device for mobility or maintenance of body functions
    • requires major continuing therapies OR
    • has other significant special needs.

Applicants with diagnosed mental health challenges (e.g. depression) and/or behavioural conditions (e.g. ADHD)  may be considered for bursary funding only if they also have significant physical disabilities, as outlined above.​

Criteria and Application Details

  • The Youth of Canada Student Scholarship is a $1500 CAD scholarship awarded to Canadian youth (citizen or permanent resident) aged 14-18 years old.

  • There will be 3 recipients.

  • Candidates are required to submit three short essays demonstrating community service, impactful experiences, and critical thinking.

  • Candidates must be enrolled in high school or post-secondary education in September of 2026 and provide proof of acceptance or enrolment if they are chosen as a recipient of the Youth of Canada Student Scholarship.

  • By applying for this scholarship, candidates agree that, if selected as a recipient, any funds received from the Youth of Canada Student Scholarship will be used for school-related expenses only.

  •  Youth of Canada reserves the right to disburse funds directly to the recipient’s educational institution or, where appropriate, to contribute funds to a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) in the recipient’s name, rather than issuing funds directly to the recipient.

One to four awards will be granted annually to any grade 12 student in Port Coquitlam who meets the following criteria:

  • In their grade 11 & 12 years is enrolled in Terry Fox Secondary or Riverside Secondary.
  • Is in good academic standing with a minimum overall grade of 75%
  • Has competed in at least one sport, or has been a team manager for at least one sport, at their high school in their grade 11 and 12 years
  • Has demonstrated high standards of leadership, athletic performance or service to a team at their high school
  • Has demonstrated a passion for their sport and a willingness to share their knowledge with younger athletes.

The Jim Hebden Chemistry Bursary will be awarded to a student who has performed service for their school and/or community while maintaining the grades in science that are necessary for success in post-secondary education. This year, the bursary will remain $1000. The $1000 bursary, to be used for post-secondary studies, is presented annually by Western Campus Resources, the exclusive distributor of the best-selling Hebden Chemistry Workbooks 11 & 12.

​1. Italian Cultural Centre Scholarships:

The Italian Cultural Centre has established four Scholarships to be granted annually to four Grade 12 students residing in Metro Vancouver. One of the applicant’s parents must be of Italian heritage, and as well a member of the Italian Cultural Centre Society. The applicants will plan to attend a post-secondary institution where they must also be prepared to pursue Italian-language course work. 

2. Tony Marzitelli Memorial Scholarship Fund:

Tony Marzitelli served on the Board of Directors of the Italian Cultural Centre for 17 years until his unexpected passing in 2010. Tony Marzitelli was an avid sports fan, but also valued the importance of community involvement and post-secondary education.

The First Citizens Fund Student Bursary Program provides financial awards to Indigenous students enrolled in post-secondary education. The David Lam/ BC TEAL English Language Learner Scholarship Award is for a refugee who has shown courage and determination while adapting to a new language and culture in Canada. It is valued at $4,000.

The David Lam/ BC TEAL English Language Learner Scholarship Award recognizes an English language learner graduating from a BC secondary school who has combined academic competence with school and community service, and who wishes to further his/her education at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia.

Please note that applicants for the David Lam/BC TEAL English Language Learner Scholarship must be documented permanent residents or citizens of Canada. International students on student visas are not eligible for this award.

The 2025-26 contest closes at day’s end on June 10, 2026.


Students must create and submit the following two items to enter the scholarship contest:

A one or two paragraph introductory document that explains why you chose to apply for Valour Canada’s History and Heritage Scholarship (.doc or .pdf format please). This will not be evaluated.

A YouTube-compatible video between four and six minutes long that educates viewers about your chosen memorial, monument, or place (see the question below). Your video should open with a still screen title page that includes: the video title, your name, your town/city, and your school. Your video should close with a still screen showing your references (as per Chicago-style formatting requirements). Your video should not have music.


The Essay Question:

Visit a local Canadian war memorial, monument, or important place in military history. Describe it, then compare and contrast its historical context with your opinion of its current meaning. Finish with some commentary about the role of Canadian war memorials in the 21st century.

Your response should reference at least two of Valour Canada’s six pillars of character (communication, cooperation, courage, responsibility, resilience, thoughtfulness).​
