Marine Mechanical Technician
Occupation Description:
“Marine Mechanical Technician” means a person who installs, troubleshoots, repairs and maintains engines, drive trains and other mechanical, electrical and fluid systems typically used in the recreational marine industry. Some light commercial and industrial applications are serviced. This work involves all aspects of repairs to diesel engines, gasoline engines, outboard engines, conventional inboard drive trains and stern drives.
This trade does not have a Red Seal, the highest certification is Certificate of Qualification (C of Q)
Application Process
November 1 to Spring Break

- student completes the fillable "SD43 Application" (top link in the right column) by typing in answers and getting necessary signatures
- submit to your counsellor at your high school
after Spring Break to late April
- Personal interview/conversation with Abraham Kang (District Coordinator) at your school
mid-May into June
- Abraham Kang (District Coordinator)will:
- email students conditional acceptances into the program
- unsuccessful applicants will also are contacted
- enroll the student at the training site(s)
- ensure counselors adjust students' timetables to reflect course/credits
- email students conditional acceptances into the program
Pre-Requisites
- look at the topics you will be taking at BCIT: Program Courses
- given those topics, it is strongly recommended you:
- complete all core gr 11 classes and have a plan for English 12
- have taken at least a couple courses in either:
- Automotive, or
- Electricity, or
- Metal/Weld
- good literacy and numeracy skills
- excellent attendance + lates record while in high school
- passion for fixing engines
- enjoy spending time on or near water
Available Seats
- Seat availability varies year to year however generally we are able to secure 2 seats a year.
Student Cost
- tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $500 for course materials, textbook, etc
Location & Transportation
- BCIT Annacis Island Campus (1608 Cliveden Avenue, Delta)
- Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian

Student Eligibility
- students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
- students must begina program prior to June 30 in their graduation year
- ex 1: a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student to participate in
- ex 2: a program will begin in August after a grade 12 has graduated - that current grade 12 should not apply as they will not be accepted
- must have government-issued photo ID that is current/valid on the ITA exam date in late January (ex: a driver's license, BC ID, or passport)
- unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students"
