Cook
Occupation Description:
Cook means a person who performs all phases of kitchen activities including the preparation and presentation of vegetables, soups, sauces, meat, fish and poultry, cold kitchen items; desserts, baking, pastry; basic menu planning/costing as well as knowledge of safety, sanitation and food storage, and who has a knowledge of human and customer relations. They usually work under limited supervision and will be competent at the major techniques and principles used in cooking, baking, and other aspects of food preparation. In addition to a sound set of cooking skills, a professional cook at this level should be able to plan and cost menus and recipes, and have an understanding of the communication skills that will be necessary to begin to take a leadership role in the kitchen.
Application Process
November 1 to Spring Break

- student completes the fillable "SD43 Application" (top link in the right column) by typing in answers and getting necessary signatures
- submit to your counsellor at your high school
after Spring Break to late April
- Personal interview/conversation with Ben King at your school
mid-May into June
- Abraham Kang (District Coordinator) will:
- email students conditional acceptances into the program
- unsuccessful applicants will also are contacted
- enroll the student at the training site(s)
- ensure counselors adjust students' timetables to reflect course/credits
- email students conditional acceptances into the program
Pre-Requisites
- ideally 2-3 cooking-type classes:
- Cook Training 11 and/or 12
- Foods & Nutrition 11 and/or 12
- Food Safe Level 1 before the start date
- good literacy and numeracy skills
- good attendance + lates record
Student Cost
- tuition-free, but students will need to pay about $400 for course materials, textbook, jacket, etc.
Location & Transportation
- Centennial and Riverside
- Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian
Time Commitment
- 1 intake: February (ending in late June)
- 5 months
- 5 days a week
- start and end times will vary, depending on high school

Student Eligibility
- limited to 1-2 Coquitlam SD43 students per intake
- students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
- students must begina program prior to June 30 in their graduation year
- ex 1: a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student to participate in
- ex 2: a program will begin in August after a grade 12 has graduated - that current grade 12 should not apply as they will not be accepted
- unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students"
