Bring Your Own Device

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program

Preparing for Grade 4 and 5 Learning

As students transition into the Intermediate years at Aspenwood Elementary, they will participate in our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program. For more than a decade, BYOD has helped students develop digital literacy skills, practice safe and responsible technology use, conduct online research, and connect learning between home and school.

Our Philosophy

Teaching Responsible Digital Citizens

Technology is an essential part of our students’ lives. Through the BYOD program, we teach students how to be responsible digital citizens by using technology safely, respectfully, and ethically. Students learn about online safety, protecting personal information, appropriate communication, and making positive choices in digital spaces.

Technology as a Tool for Learning

At Aspenwood, we want students to see technology as more than entertainment. Devices are used to support learning, creativity, collaboration, research, problem-solving, and communication. By integrating technology into meaningful classroom activities, students learn how digital tools can help them explore ideas, deepen their understanding, and share their learning with others.

Preparing Students for a Digital World

Our goal is to help students develop a healthy balance between digital and non-digital learning experiences. Technology is used when it enhances learning, while traditional methods such as reading, writing, discussion, hands-on activities, and outdoor learning remain important parts of the school day. Through this balanced approach, students build the skills, habits, and judgment needed to succeed in an increasingly digital world.

Device Requirements

Grade 4 and 5 students are expected to bring a personal device to school each day beginning in late September or early October.

To support classroom learning, devices must:

  • Have a screen size of at least 10 inches
  • Include a physical keyboard
  • Be capable of running common educational software and web-based applications

Choosing a Device

We always recommend using a device your family already has. Families purchasing a new device may wish to consider:

  • A lightweight device that can be transported easily
  • Strong battery life for a full day of learning
  • Adequate storage space for long-term use
  • A protective case for durability
  • A mouse for improved usability with laptops

Aspenwood staff have found that Windows-based devices often provide the most consistent experience with district-supported applications. Students also receive free access to Microsoft Office 365 through School District 43.

There is no need to buy any additional software.
