Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Occupation Description:

Aircraft Maintenance Technician Category "M" (Maintenance) means a person who performs inspections and troubleshooting of an aircraft, including airframe structures, engines and aircraft systems, disassembles and removes defective parts, assembles and installs replacement parts, interprets technical manuals, drawings and blueprints, tests aircraft systems, records problems and action taken to rectify them and maintains an accurate statement of the maintenance history of the aircraft.

Application Process

November 1 to Spring Break

  • look over all the information below and - get a good understanding of the pre-reqs, expectations, time commitment,    reading, math, training, etc
    • no questions... go ahead and apply for the program!

      • use the: Booking App, or
      • use the QR code in the right column
  • student completes the fillable "SD43 Application" (top link in the right column) by typing in answers and getting necessary signatures
  • submit to your counsellor at your high school

after Spring Break to late April

  • Personal interview/conversation with Abraham Kang at your school

mid-May into June

  • Abraham Kang will:
    • email students conditional acceptances into the program
      • unsuccessful applicants will also are contacted
    • enroll the student at the training site(s)
    • ensure counselors adjust students' timetables to reflect course/credits
Pre-Requisites
  • look at the topics you will be taking while at BCIT:  Program courses
  • given those BCIT courses the pre-reqs include:
    • English 12
      • some students have done English 11 and 12 in their grade 12 to free up intake options in their grade 12 year
    • Physics 11 (ideally "C+" or higher)
    • Math Foundations or Pre-Calc 11 ("B") or Workplace 11 ("A")
      • even better if you have Math 12 also
    • at least two, ideally all three, of these:
      • Electronics 11
        ideally Electronics 12 too (given 14 of the 32 credits in term 1 are on electrical "foundations" and "standards)
    • Automotive 11
      • even better to have Auto 12 too
    • Metal 11
  • excellent attendance + lates record while in high school
Student Cost
  • tuition-free, but students will need to pay BCIT about $450 for program fees 
Location & Transportation
  • BCIT "Aerospace Tech Campus" - 3800 Cessna Drive, Richmond
    • please note: this is close to YVR airport
  • Transportation, to and from the training site, is the responsibility of the parent/guardian
    • Skytrain is the best transportation option
Intakes & Time Commitment
  • 3 intakes:  late August, early January andMay
    • each intake is made up of 4 terms (each lasting 16 weeks)
    • once you begin the program you cannot take a term off
      • that is, you cannot start in August, go back to your high school for semester 2, then continue at BCIT the following August 
  • 16 weeks long (depending on intake, no Spring or Summer Break)
  • 5 days a week:  Monday to Friday
  • 8.00am to 3.30pm
Available Seats
  • August and January intakes each has 2-3 seats reserved for students across the lower mainland. The May intake seats are reserved for one school district and they are really difficult to get. So trying to arrange course and timetables around the August and January intakes would be recommended

Student Eligibility
  • students typically take this program in their grade 12 year after taking all the necessary/core grade 11 subjects
  • students must begin a program prior to June 30 in their graduation year
    • ex 1:  a grade 12's program begins in March and runs for 23 weeks - this is okay for a grade 12 student to participate in
    • ex 2:  a program will begin in September after a grade 12 has graduated - this is not okay and that current grade 12s should not apply as they will not be accepted
  • unfortunately, this program is not available to "International students
