This summer BCIT is offering a program for current grade 11 females (who will be in grade 12 come July 1) who are interested in doing the “Electrical Foundations" program at their Burnaby campus.
The intake will be 16 females (14 will be regular graduated students + 2 grade 12 high school students).
It will run for 24 weeks (early Aug to early Feb) – Mon to Fri from (probably around 8.00am to 2.00pm)
It would count as a dual credit program – meaning the students would receive BCIT credits plus 6 high school courses at the grade 12 level.
It will be tuition-free, saving family around $3,200
Students should be/have:
- an interest in the electrical trades, not just 'something to try to see if I like it'
- solid abilities in Math and English, as they do mention they are looking at GPA
- ideally, Physics 11
- no concern with lates or absences, as it's pretty much 'three strikes and your out' at the post secondary… there will be some room for absences, but not unexcused ones
- related to that is the idea that the student/parent has secured a transportation plan (especially for the early start)
- maybe some Work Experience 12 with an electrical placement,
or some related community experience in the trade
