Theatre Classes
Drama 9
In this introduction to acting course, you will experience a survey of an array of dramatic forms. From theatre games, to mime, to improvisation, to working with small scenes, to developing and contributing to an end of semester production, you will get an extensive overview of all things dramatic arts. This class will improve confidence speaking in front of others, improve your ability to collaborate, will decrease anxiety in formal presentations, and will aid in communication skills. These acquired skills from Drama 9 are not just valuable in the presentation of dramatic arts but are transferable to all other classes and social engagements.
Theatre Company 11: Acting
Theatre Performance 11 involves a deeper dive into the dramatic arts. We will take the skills acquired in Acting 9 and work on specifics to improve the caliber of dramatic creations. Students will develop personal and interpersonal skills, acquire techniques for working with script and production detail, and use these in the preparation and presentation of scenes. In addition, students will get a more comprehensive view of offstage roles such as stage managing, lighting design, and directing.
Theatre Company 12: Acting
In Theatre Performance 12, students will learn about the nature of a theatre company and the interconnected roles and responsibilities of people who work within it. They will examine the requirements for teamwork, leadership, commitment, and onstage, backstage and front-of house etiquette. Students will be tasked to come up with their own theatre company, write their own script, cast, direct, market, lighting design, and produce their own shows to be showcased at the end of the semester.
Fall Production

Each Fall, Port Moody Secondary puts on an extracurricular fall play where anyone (no matter theatre experience) is able to participate. This is an extra-curricular activity that allows students to experiment with lighting design, stage managing, sound design, costume design, crew and backstage work, script-writing, or performing and acting. This club culminates in a live performance at the school and participation in METfest (the district annual Drama festival). This year the students are rehearsing and performing The Bald Soprano by Eugène Ionesco.
The Bald Soprano is an absurdist play by Romanian-French playwright Eugène Ionesco, first performed in French in 1950. The play centres on the Smiths, a couple from London, and another couple, the Martins, who come over for a visit. The two families chatter in meaningless banter, tell stories and relate nonsensical truisms and poems. They are joined later by the Smiths' maid, Mary, and the local fire chief. The Bald Soprano is considered a modern classic and a seminal work in the Theatre of the Absurd; it holds the world record for the play that has been staged continuously in the same theatre for the longest time.
Port Moody Secondary's Theatre Department will be staging an English translation of this incredible French script.

Spring Productions
Every Spring Port Moody Secondary School presents a big theatrical performance. Whereas the Fall Play is a one-act show capable of moving from our building to Heritage Woods (for METfest), the Spring Show is often a big stage musical with sets, choreography, lighting, and design. Our Spring Musical will be Working (2012 Edition) - for those that do not know the musical, Working is a series of monologues (singing and non-singing) that tell the real life stories of working class citizens in America. Please see at the top of the page, the opportunity to buy tickets for the show!
