The Role of a School Counsellor

As well as being accredited teachers, School Counsellors are trained mental health professionals with graduate level degrees in counselling psychology.  They help with:

  • Academic support:
    • Help students with course selection and create academic plans to meet their goals.
  • Personal and social-emotional support:
    • Offer short-term individual and group counselling for problems such as stress, anxiety, and social challenges.
    • Help students develop self-esteem, decision-making skills, and social skills.
  • Collaboration and advocacy:
    • Act as a liaison between students, parents, teachers, and the school administration.
    • Advocate for students' needs
  • Referrals:
    • Identify students who need specialized help and refer them to external, community-based resources and mental health programs.
  • Prevention programs:
    • Facilitate programs to raise awareness about important issues such as drug abuse and other challenges students may face.

 
The Role of the Post-Secondary and Career Advisor

Advisors specialize in providing up-to-date information on post-secondary and career options.  They assist with college and university applications by providing detailed information about entrance requirements, pre-requisite courses, deadlines, and scholarship opportunities for students and their families.
