What is a middle school?
Middle Schools provide a three year transition between the self contained classrooms of elementary school and the greater independence of secondary school settings.
Core pillars of middle school include:
1. Flexible block scheduling
2. Teams
3. Advisory
4. Common preparation time
5. Explorations (Digital Literacy, STEAM, Music, Art, Home Economics)
Middle schools are made up of schools within schools or teams. The need to belong is an important developmental norm in this stage of development. Teams help keep students connected and engaged with their school. Montgomery Middle has 4 teams with a balance of grade 6-8 students within each team. Within each team, students are assigned to one advisory teacher who is their key teacher and is the main point of contact for parents. The majority of academic subjects will be taught by a student's advisory teacher.
Montgomery Middle has 6 blocks each day. Students have one Explorations class Monday to Thursday (Music, Tech Ed, Home Ec or Art) at a time for approximately 10 weeks. During the school day each team can use flexible scheduling to plan for learning for the remaining 5 blocks (team schedule). This allows for longer or shorter periods of learning as needed. Each team 's weekly schedule includes the following;
- Social Studies
- Science
- Language Arts
- Math (common time in block 2)
- French
- Career Education
- PHE/ Physical Health Education
- Library Time
- Team Time
We have three school goals. Our Indigenous Goal focuses about learning about place and our social emotion goal is promoting anti racism, specifically the eliminating the use of racist language. Our numeracy goal focuses on multiplicative thinking (using numbers fluently and flexibly.

Common preparation time is provided to teachers in each team so that they can work as a team to develop common expectations, develop curriculum, address student needs and plan team activities.
Explorations courses: These courses are taught one at a time for about 6 weeks by subject specialists and provide middle school students with a sampling of course experiences that will help inform their elective course choices in high school. They include, Art, STEAM, Digital Literacy, Home Economics and Music.
Lockers- Every student is assigned a locker to store their personal belongings, students are asked to keep their cell phone in their locker (if they own one). Locks are provided and students are given time to practice.
Cafeteria (Cafe Monte)- There is no food service available at any middle school except for the monthly hot lunch that our PAC organizes. Students eat their lunch in their classroom and then go outside for 30 minutes or have the option of going to the gym to watch or play intramurals, the cafeteria to play board games or hang out or join one of the clubs offered at lunch.
Closed campus- Middle Schools are closed campuses. Students are expected to remain on the school property at break times.
Monty ROCKS- This forms an important part of our school code of conduct and frames the general expectations that we have for all students and staff.
