Black Futures Experience at UBC

September 27, 2023

Black Futures experience at University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus)

This is an exclusive opportunity for students who identify as Black to support their transition from high school to post-secondary life.

The Black Futures experience is a unique opportunity for young Black teens in grades 11 and 12 from across the lower mainland. The objective of the program is to support students who identify as Black as they complete their secondary education and identify avenues of study and or work as they begin planning for the next phase of their lives. A fantastic opportunity for Black teens to explore their passions, hear from young Black leaders, doctors, professors, lawyers and other professionals and find out what campus life is like as well as meet other Black teens in grades 11 and 12!

You do not have to aspire to attend UBC to participate. The program aims to highlight the many academic and career options that are available to students and identify resources to support the accomplishment of their post-secondary goals. It will span the 2023-2024 school year and will be hybrid in its delivery. There will be 3 Zoom meetings and 3 campus experience days scheduled as follows:

  • Thursday October 26, 2023, 4:30 PM (Zoom session #1)
  • Thursday November 16, 2023, 9:30 AM (Visit #1 to UBC Campus)
  • Thursday January 25, 2024, 4:30 PM (Zoom session #2)
  • Thursday March 7, 2024, 4:30 PM (Zoom session #3)
  • Thursday April 11, 2024, 9:30 AM (Visit #2 to UBC Campus)
  • Thursday May 9, 2024 (Visit #3 to UBC Campus - Graduation/Celebration)

Participating students may receive credits towards their Capstone CLC course if they participate in all 6 events (Zoom meetings and campus experiences). Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a survey documenting demographic information, student interest, study habits, challenges, and aspirations for the future.

If you are a student who identifies as Black and wish to participate, please reach out to Ms. Raquel Chin, Ms. Rochelle David or Ms. Jill Della Vedova at your earliest convenience for a detailed registration package.
