'Each child is a gift entrusted to us by her/his family.'
Dear École Porter Elementary School Families,
I trust you all had a wonderful and fun-filled summer with family and friends.
The staff and I are extremely excited to open our school doors and welcome back our students and families for this 2018-2019 school year.
School will begin next Tuesday, September 4, 2018. I have included the Opening Day & Week Procedures on page 2 of this newsletter. In addition, I will email these procedures to all our families as well as upload them to our Porter Street Public website. Lastly, I will, this week, post the procedures on the windows on all our school doors.
I feel privileged and am looking forward to, once again, serve the Porter students and their families, staff and community. Our school has a rich and deep tradition of respect, care and commitment to learning.
I strongly believe that our Porter Staff are extremely fortunate to be in a profession of service to others. The vocation of teaching and caring for students in our public education system is, daily, filled with endless moments of sharing in a child's wonder, amazement and excitement around learning as well as the understanding and knowledge that she/he is cared for deeply and will be treated with the respect, dignity and care she/he deserves and is entitled to.
Each student will be afforded the opportunity to learn according to her/his individual and unique learning style; the knowledge that they are always the 'lens' through which we make all of our decisions; that they are secure in the knowledge that every adult who works at Porter models those virtues and values we expect from our students; and, most importantly, the knowledge that every single adult at Porter BELIEVES in every single student and her/his potential.
At Porter, we have approximately 400 students - your children - many of whom are or will be feeling, over these next several days, a sense of anticipation, excitement, trepidation, hopefulness and thinking of all the possibilities, wishes and dreams of what lays ahead this school year.
On the morning of the first day of school your child will walk through our doors; our new Kindergarten students wide-eyed and extremely excited to begin school; our new Grade 1 – 5 students who, this summer, left neighbourhoods, schools and friends and will walk through our doors with some doubt, hesitation and wonder about what Porter is all about; and approximately 300 returning students eager to reestablish friendships, make new friendships, say hello to staff and continue their journey of learning.
This 2018-2019 school year will build on last school year's exciting and significant changes in Education in our outstanding province. This school year will be the third year of the full implementation of our new provincial curriculum for Grades K - 9. Please see page 11 of this Newsletter for more information.
In addition, we are very excited about our fourth year of focus on our Action Plan for Learning school-wide goal, Social Emotional Learning. Staff will continue to be learning and teaching our students skills and strategies of being a self-regulated learner.
Whether new or returning, the common thread for each and every child who walks through our doors is the desire and excitement to learn, to hope, to experience new possibilities, to accomplish new things, to make new friends, to be respected, to feel safe and welcomed - to dream!!
The impact that our outstanding Porter Staff will have on your child (and every person who walks through our doors) is profound. Our individual and collective actions and words have the power to lift spirits and inspire a child to feel she or he matters and is important in this world.
Without exception, our teachers and support staff care deeply for the students and their families, our school community as well as our outstanding profession. They are extremely excited and eager to begin this school year.
On behalf of our entire staff, I would like to thank you all for your commitment, care and LOVE for your children and your care, support and trust in our staff and school community.
I look forward to the journey ahead of us that is the 2018-2019 school year!
I wish you all a healthy, joyful, fulfilling and successful school year!!
