Scholar Tree Blog

In addition to providing students with the most efficient way to find scholarships that they are eligible for, we wanted to give them insight from students who have walked their path before. That is why we created the ScholarTree Blog

We know that the holiday break is the prime time when students decide which University/College they want to attend next year. That is why recently our blog has featured first-hand accounts from students of how they got accepted into some of the more selective programs.  See Location/Links column in this row for linked pages.

PharmaSci
vs
 Pharmacy
vs
Pharmacology
at
UBC
Are you confused about the Pharma programs

Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science

  • This is a newer degree and has been around since 2020. You apply to Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. This MUST be your first choice on your application or you will not be considered.
  • This is a direct entry program from high school or you can transfer in after first year but limited seats in year 2 entry.  This is the only English speaking program of its type in Canada. it has a focus on discovery - very intensive labs prepare you for working in a lab, research or grad school.
  • Expect to require high 80s to low 90s for admission plus an interview is required. 80 seats available.  There is a supplemental required (with a fee).
  • In the interview they are looking for well-rounded, extracurriculars and communication skills.
  • You should be a strong student in Biology, Chemistry and Math.  No Physics 11 required for admission.
  • This can be a good pathway to lots of science related careers, including medicine, dentistry or pharmacy.
    • Year 1: foundation in sciences
    • year 2: specialized Biology & Chemistry courses
    • Year 3: transition into more specialized topics like nanomedicine, pharmacokinetics, medicinal chemistry. Also career building course, networking events.
    • Year 4: You have two options - choose practicum or choose honours and do research and honours thesis.
  • An advantage to this program vs Science is you do not have to apply for specialty after year 1.
  • Most offers go out end of Feb to end of April.

Doctor of Pharmacy - Entry to Practice.

This is not a direct entry from high school. You must complete at least 2 years of undergrad coursework (min. 60 credits including pre-requisite courses) and then apply to the Pharma D program. This can be in science or PharmaSci as long as you complete pre-requisites.

  • This program is only open to Canadian Citizens or PR. it is the only program in BC leading to licensure.
  • 224 seats and expect 1.5 to 2x the number of applicants to available seats.
  • Minimum 70% required on 60 credits and then they will focus on the interview. Everyone with 70% gets invited to an interview but then they are shortlisted so 70% is likely too low.
  • Priority for BC residents on shortlist. No advantage given to previous UBC students.
  • Must complete all 4 years of course work plus 42 weeks of practicum.

Pharmacology

  • This is in the Faculty of Science so you apply to Pharmacology after year 1 of science. It is competitive entry based on your year 1 grades.
  • Many students use this as a pathway to medical school.

U Guelph One Health Degree
  • The program will examine health problems from a holistic perspective, considering interactions between animal, human, and ecological systems. Students in the program will learn about socio-cultural and scientific perspectives, interdisciplinary problem solving, and mitigation of issues such as transmission of zoonotic diseases and anti-microbial resistance.
  • “This program helps to meet the needs of students who have interests in both science and social sciences, and those who are looking to make connections with real-world complex health issues and challenges facing society," said Heather Pollock, UoGuelph's CBS manager of academic programs.
  • The program is reportedly the first four-year undergraduate One Health program in Canada.
