The HWSS PE Department presents a variety of courses for students to enhance the quality of their life experiences through activities featured in our programs. Physical activity on a regular basis is valued as an essential component for physical improvement, personal growth and development of lifelong skills, and provides long term benefits to overall health and fitness. Through participation in physical education, students will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to contribute to their physical, mental and social well‐being, and to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.

PHE Department Goal:

  • The Aim of the Physical Education Program is to enable all learners to enhance their quality of life through active living. 
  • Our goal is to expose students to a variety of sports, activities, and leisure pursuits so that they will develop the knowledge, skills, attitude, and experience necessary to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
  • Overall, the main focus is to enhance and improve the physical health and mental wellness of our students during this extraordinary time.

Physical and Health Education Courses goals:

- Physical Literacy: refining and applying movement skills and concepts in a variety of physical activities and environments.
- Health and Active Living Strategies: participation and analyzation of healthy living strategies.
- Social and Community Health: developing skills for maintaining healthy relationships and developing -healthy relationship strategies.
- Mental Well Being: evaluating and explaining strategies for mental well-being and physical health.


Fitness Course Goals:

- Principles of Training: developing and demonstrating a variety of appropriate exercise techniques, safety, and creating and implementing a personalized fitness program.

- Healthy and Active Living: through participation in daily physical activities designed to enhance and maintain health components of fitness, and showing an ability to identify, apply and reflect on strategies used to pursue personal fitness goals.

- Human Anatomy and Physiology: ability to identify and describe how muscles produce movement in different parts of the body and how to train those muscles and identifying and describing the influences of different training styles on fitness results.

- Social Responsibility: demonstrating safe and appropriate behaviours in different fitness activities and environments for themselves and others.

Please note, for all Physical Education-based and Fitness courses students are expected to wear appropriate gym strip to every class. 

  • T-shirt and athletic shorts, athletic pants (sweatpants or track pants), or legging. 
    • Sports bras, crop tops, etc. or very short shorts are not accepted clothing for the course.
  • Sweatshirts are permitted for comfort/weather.
  • Proper athletic and non-marking running shoes are mandatory. 

 

GRADE 9 COURSES

PHYSICAL AND HEALTH EDUCATION 9 (PHE 9) (MPHE-09)

Physical and Health Education (PHE) is part of the K-9 curriculum. PHE is designed to develop educated citizens who have the knowledge, skill, and understanding they need to be safe, active, and healthy citizens throughout their lives. PHE curriculum focuses on competencies that support lifelong learning, physical fitness, and healthy relationships to support lifelong activity and health.


ELECTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9 COURSES:

AGILITY 9 (Semester 1) (XLDCG09)

These co‐ed courses are designed for athletes who wish to develop sport specific fitness and skills. Students will focus on a variety of activities such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to their chosen sport. Specific physical components of the course will include an emphasis on speed, agility, and quickness. Special emphasis will be placed on developing an individual program for each student. Course typically runs during block 1.

 

BASKETBALL AGILITY 9 (Semester 1) (XLDCG09---AGL)

These co‐ed courses are designed for athletes who wish to develop sport specific fitness and skills. Students will focus on a variety of activities such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to the game of Basketball. Specific physical components of the course will include an emphasis on speed, agility, and quickness. Special emphasis will be placed on developing an individual program for each student with an emphasis on Basketball and developing your overall game. Students are typically organized by team cohorts, but there is also an opportunity for non-team players to participate. Time is split between the gym and fitness areas. Course Typically runs during block 1.

 

ATHLETIC TRAINING 9: COED (XLDCG09-AT)

This course is designed for athletes who wish to develop fitness and skills specific to sport. Students will focus on a wide variety of advanced conditioning programs such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to their chosen sport. Specific physical components of the course will include an emphasis on speed, agility and quickness. Course typically runs during block 1.

 

BASKETBALL ATHLETIC TRAINING 9: CO-ED (XLDCG09-AT)

This course is designed for athletes who wish to develop fitness and skills specific to sport. Students will focus on a wide variety of advanced conditioning programs such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to their chosen sport. Specific physical components of the course will include an emphasis on speed, agility and quickness with an emphasis on Basketball and developing your overall game. Course typically runs during block 1.


FITNESS 9 COED (XLDCG09-FTC)

This course is an introduction to fitness that focuses on training concepts and full body conditioning. Students will be introduced to a variety of training programs and techniques with a focus on weight training in the weight room. Students will learn about different styles and goals of fitness training and learn program design for lifelong health and fitness. Topics include principles of fitness, goal setting, nutrition, muscular and skeletal systems, weight room safety, and other fitness and health related topics.


FITNESS 9 WOMEN (XLDCG09-FTW)

This course is designed to encourage both active and non‐active teenage girls to participate in a wide variety of fun‐filled supportive fitness and recreational activities. It will focus on developing personal fitness as well as positive self‐esteem. Many training programs will be utilized including yoga, Pilates, weight training, circuit training, running, walking, etc.

Throughout this course students will also have opportunities to explore issues relating to women in sport, recreation, health & fitness.


GRADE 10-12 COURSES

Physical and Health Education 10 (MPHED10)

PHE 10 is part of the K-12 curriculum and is designed to develop educated citizens who have the knowledge, skills, and understanding that they need to be safe, active, and healthy citizens throughout their lives. The PHE curriculum focuses on competencies that support life-long learning and health through activity and fitness. Students will participate in a variety of individual, partner and group activities that emphasize lifelong activity and the importance of adopting an active lifestyle. Health topics also include healthy relationships and nutrition, and well as CPR.


ACTIVE LIVING 11 & 12 (MACLV11/12)

This senior level physical education course emphasizes the development of an appreciation for physical activities to promote lifelong activity and health. Students will participate in a wide variety of team sports and recreational activities in order to further their understanding of the importance of physical movement for overall health, as well as developing leadership skills through activity design, organization, and implementation.

  • Health and Well-Being: maintaining and encouraging lifelong participation and health.
  • Safety: with equipment and self.
  • Participation: in a variety of activities with monitoring and adjusting exertion levels.
  • Leadership: showing initiative and organization with class events.

 

WEIGHT TRAINING 10 (YLRA-0A) 

FITNESS AND CONDITIONING 11, 12 (MFTCD11/12)

This co‐ed course will help prepare students to lead healthy lifestyles now and after they leave high school. Weight training as well as the development of muscular strength and endurance is the focus. Students will improve muscle function, muscular endurance, balance, coordination, speed, and agility. While work in the weight room will be the primary focus, other activities will include running, hiking, minor and team games. This class will help build a strong, healthy body and build confidence. Students will learn to perform athletically and reduce the risk of injury. Classroom lessons will supplement the training sessions with valuable health and fitness information on such topics as nutrition, anatomy and physiology designs, and other health topics.


WOMEN’S FITNESS 10, 11 & 12 (MFTCD11—G, MFTCD12—G) 

These courses are designed to encourage both active and non‐active teenage girls to participate in a wide variety of fun‐ filled fitness and recreational activities in a positive and supportive environment. No matter what your fitness level currently is the focus will be to work to the best of your ability. The class will consist of personal and group fitness as well as building positive self‐ esteem and confidence. Numerous training programs will be utilized including yoga, weight training, circuit training, high intensity interval training (HIIT), running, walking, hiking etc. Students will learn how to be active and create and design workouts with and without access to equipment. Throughout this course students will also have opportunities to explore issues relating to women in sport, recreation, health & fitness.

AGILITY 11 and 12: FITNESS AND CONDITIONING (MFTCD11—A, MFTCD12—A)

These co‐ed courses are designed for athletes who wish to develop sport specific fitness and skills. Students will focus on a variety of activities such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to their chosen sport. Specific physical components of the course will include an emphasis on speed, agility, and quickness. Special emphasis will be placed on developing an individual program for each student. Course typically runs during block 1.

Students will focus on a variety of activities such as plyometrics, interval training, running, and weight training as they relate to the game of Basketball. Specific physical components of the course will include an emphasis on speed, agility, and quickness. Special emphasis will be placed on developing an individual program for each student with an emphasis on Basketball and developing your overall game. Students are typically organized by team cohorts, but there is also an opportunity for non-team players to participate. Time is split between the gym and fitness areas. Course typically runs during block 1.

 

ATHLETIC TRAINING (AT) 10 (Semester 2) (YLRA-0B)

ATHLETIC TRAINING 11 & 12: OPTIMIZING ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE (Semester 2) (YLRA-1C, YLRA-2C)

This co‐ed course is designed for students who are motivated to significantly improve their functional strength and endurance. Special emphasis will be placed on balance, coordination and efficiency of movement in sport as well as ways to improve personal speed, agility, and quickness. Students should expect to be in the weight room at least two times per week. Training sessions will help decrease body fat and increase lean body mass. Classroom sessions will provide valuable health and fitness information on such topics as proper meal planning for athletes, hydration practices, and ways to improve recovery following strenuous activities. Other fitness activities may include running, hiking, plyometrics, minor games, and team games. Course typically runs during block 1.


BASKETBALL ATHLETIC TRAINING (AT) 10 (Semester 2) (YLRA-0B)

BASKETBALL ATHLETIC TRAINING 11 & 12: OPTIMIZING ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE (Sem 2) (YLRA-1C-BA, YLRA-2C-BA) 

This co‐ed course is designed for students who are motivated to significantly improve their functional strength and endurance. Special emphasis will be placed on balance, coordination and efficiency of movement with the focus on Basketball as well as ways to improve personal speed, agility, and quickness. Students should expect to be in the weight room at least two times per week and in the gym for the other portion of the course. Course typically runs during block 1.
