 Course Descriptions


Biology 11 is designed to introduce students to the diversity of living organisms and their adaption to their environment. The major Kingdoms are examined and topics covered include: taxonomy, evolution, microbiology, plant biology, animal biology, mycology and ecology.  The theme of evolutionary change is carried out in all units of study.  There is also a heavy emphasis on laboratory work which includes microscope work and dissections. Foundation course: Science 10.


Biology 12 is an advanced course that covers two major areas of study:  cell biology and human physiology.  Cellular biology covers biological molecules, cell structure, cell membrane transport, DNA, protein synthesis,   and enzymatic activity.  Human physiology covers the major body systems: digestive, respiratory, circulatory, excretory, nervous and reproductive.  Laboratory work, including dissections, is a critical component of Biology 12.  This course also has an optional Graduation Program exam, worth 40%. Foundation course: Biology 11.Chemistry 11 is strongly recommended as the cellular biology component requires background chemistry knowledge.


This Semester 2 course is for the highly motivated Biology student who wishes to study Biology 11 and 12 course content in greater depth and detail.  This course introduces the student to the rigours of university-level material and has an extensive laboratory component.  Dissection work is a component of the curriculum. Course content includes: Molecules and Cells –biological chemistry, cells, and energy transformations (25%); Heredity and Evolution – molecular genetics, heredity, evolution (25%); Organisms and Populations – taxonomy, survey of protista, monera, fungi, plants, animals and ecology (50%). There is an optional College Board AP Biology exam in May for students who wish to obtain advanced standing or credits at some universities.  There is a mandatory Final Exam in the course.  Foundation courses: Biology 11, Biology 12, Chemistry 11, and Chemistry 12. Biology 12 should be taken in Semester 1. Chemistry 12 should be taken in Semester 1 or concurrently in Semester 2.


Chemistry 11 involves the study of atoms, molecules, and matter, chemical reactions, solution chemistry, and organic chemistry.  It introduces the concept of the mole, and how it applies to chemical reactions.  Many interesting laboratory experiments are performed, to help students understand the lecture concepts.  This is a heavily math-based course.  Students who enjoy writing chemical formulae, and working through chemical reaction calculations, will enjoy this course!  Optional topics such as environmental chemistry and nuclear chemistry, may also be covered. Chemistry 12 builds on experiences in Chemistry 11. Students must have a good understanding of the Mole Concept, Stoichiometry and Solution Chemistry taught in Chemistry 11. Since there is a strong mathematical problem solving component involved in this course, it is advisable that students have above average grades in Math 11 Principles.  Many interesting experiments help students understand the rates of chemical reactions, chemical equilibrium,  reactions in solution, acid-base chemistry, and electrochemistry. Students will gain an increased understanding of the importance of chemistry in the modern world.   This course also has an optional Graduation Program exam, worth 40%.  Foundation course: Chemistry 11.


This course covers material equivalent to first year university chemistry. It is an excellent preview of university chemistry and will give students an advantage in post-secondary science programs. Labs will be done in class and virtually (via software).  Course topics include; Unit 1 – Structure of matter (atomic structure, chemical bonding, nuclear bonding), Unit II - States of matter (gases, liquids and solids, solutions), Unit III – Reactions (types, stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics), Unit IV – Organic chemistry. In May, the students have the option of writing the College Board Advanced Placement Chemistry exam to give them university credit for the course.  Foundation course: Chemistry 12.


This course explores the Earth and its place in the solar system and involves a hands-on approach to studying rocks and minerals, plate tectonics, the hydrosphere and surface processes, geological time, and astronomy.   These topics are covered through an integration of class work, labs, projects and limited field studies.  This course fulfills the Science 11 requirement for graduation. Experiential Studies 10 (E.S. 10) is a unique program that will be offered during the second semester of the school year. The program will combine Science 10, Planning 10, Socials Studies 10, Earth Science 11, Physical Education 10, and Leadership 10. All curriculum requirements for these courses will be met. The program aims to extend and enrich a student's understanding of these six courses. The subjects will be taught in a manner that integrates traditional class work, science labs, projects, and field studies. The field experiences will vary from one to three day trips to one larger two-week trip. Field experiences may center on subjects like biology, geography, geology, history, etc. while doing activitiessuch as kayaking, mountain biking and hiking. The program will be taught by two teachers who will stay with the same group of students for the entire semester. There will be an application process that will involve looking at students who are flexible, work well in a team, enjoy the outdoors, enjoy “hands on” experiences, and will make a commitment to the group. Students in this course play an important role in protecting and enhancing the local environment. Major projects involve the operation of Mossom Creek Hatchery, water quality of local streams, marine studies of habour seals and plankton, streamside vegetation identification, study of intertidal marine invertebrates, environmental outreach via local stewardship groups,  public fairs and visits to elementary classrooms. Work experience opportunities and career exploration are also offered. This class operates on a 4 day per week schedule, with class work Tuesday through Thursday and double classes in the field Monday. Open to students in Grades 11 and 12.  Course fee to cover transportation and admission costs. Foundation course: Science 10.


This is the first course in the secondary physics program, which is designed to introduce students to the study of Physical Science as a discipline. Since Physics 11 offers the opportunity to experience a structured scientific approach to the forces affecting the natural world, good mathematical problem solving skills are important. While our Grade 11 course focuses on the motion of objects and the classical foundations of physics in preparation for Grade 12, students also explore light, waves, optics, and nuclear energy. Students are encouraged to develop a scientific and positive attitude towards the understanding of physical science. Foundation course: Science 10.


The second course in a secondary physics program,  it is designed to prepare students for further study of physical science at a post-secondary level. The focus in Grade 12 is on a structured mathematical foundation for applying physical laws to the two and three-dimensional world. Classical Newtonian mechanics, introduced in Grade 11, are further explored for the first half, while the second half provides students with a thorough grounding in electromagnetism. Students will have the opportunity to compete in local, national, and international physics competitions. This course also has an optional Graduation Program exam, worth 40%.  Foundation course: Physics 11.





This program allows academically strong Grade 9 students to accelerate, thereby providing some additional preparation time for the Advanced Placement science courses in Grades 10 through 12.  Grade 9 students in the pre-AP program work both independently and with a Science teacher on Science 9 on-line in Semester 1. Students then take Science 10 Honours in Semester 2. Students who choose this program need a computer and internet access. In Grade 10, students would take one or more Grade 11 level science courses followed by Grade 12 level courses in Grade 11. In their Grade 12 year, students would be eligible to choose from a variety of AP Seminar science courses (see AP Courses below). Separate application form and recommendation from the Science 8 teacher and counsellor is required.


The Science 9 course introduces students to individual and group discovery in a laboratory setting. This course is activity based with an emphasis on four areas of scientific discovery. In Chemistry, the major concepts of ionic compounds and patterns within the periodic table are explored. In Physics, the major emphasis is on static and current electricity. In Astronomy, the students investigate the origins of the universe as well as phenomena occurring within the Earth/Moon system. In Biology, the major topics are the processes within the cell’s nucleus involving DNA and cell division. The goals of the course are to introduce students to scientific discovery, a wide range of scientific knowledge, and to teach them to work effectively in a group setting. 


The Science 10 course encourages students to work together in a laboratory setting to safely investigate avariety of topics in the four major science areas: in Biology - the focus is on ecology, sustaining Earth's ecosystems, energy flow and nutrients, how living and non-living things interact with each other in the environment; in Chemistry – the periodic table, formulas, compounds, reactions, and radioactivity are studied; in Physics –the study of motion including concepts associated with acceleration, velocity and displacement; in Earth Science – processes occurring inside the Earth and in the atmosphere, energy transfer, and climate change are included. The goals of the course are to increase scientific knowledge, and to promote critical thinking skills, proper lab skills, and proper attitudes about safety, as well as to prepare students for the provincial exam.  The course and the exam are mandatory graduation requirements. SCIENCE 10 Honours

Science 10 H covers the same topics as the regular Science 10 course, with some enhancements, and at a slightly quicker pace.  The course is meant for academically strong students who are interested in taking more than one specialty Science course, at the grades 11 and 12 levels.  Topics are covered in the four major Science areas: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science.  Interesting laboratory experiments and activities are part of the course.  Students must write the mandatory Science 10 provincial exam at the end of the semester.  A recommendation from a Science 9 teacher and a counsellor is required.  Foundation course:  Science 9 






This course will take a unique approach to science, looking at the practical applications of scientific principles and evaluating the positive and negative effects of technology on our society and the environment. Advances in various areas such as communications, energy and resources, health, transportation, and manufacturing will be investigated. Problem solving will be emphasized, involving a combination of classroom and project work. This course will fulfill the Science 11 requirement for graduation but not for university entrance.  Foundation course: Science 10.



Do you love nature? Wildlife 11 focuses on the animals and plants of British Columbia. No other course offers the opportunity to go on nature-study trips to local streams, forests, and beaches. You will experience everything from alligator lizards to zooplankton. Unit topics include careers in natural resources, local environmental concerns and bird identification. Animals such as grizzlies, cougars, whales, birds of prey and bats will be studied. B.C. has more different kinds of wildlife than any other region in Canada. Take advantage of this feature of our province. Don't miss the bus.  This class operates on a 4 day per week schedule, with class work Tuesday through Thursday and double classes in the field Monday. Open to students in Grades 10, 11 and 12. Course fee to cover transportation and admission costs. Foundation course: None.
