The UBC Black Futures program is a unique opportunity for Gr. 11 and 12 Black students from across Greater Vancouver to be introduced to post-secondary options and discussions about higher education. Last year’s program was hugely successful, and we anticipate that this year will be too. With a slogan of “if you can see it, you can be it”, it allows students to envision their academic future. Students DO NOT need to be planning on attending UBC to be a part of this program.

The program consists of five in-person meetings at UBC between Jan and May. High school students will meet with UBC students, as well as a variety of faculty and other professionals. There is no cost for students to attend. Transportation to and from UBC will be provided and students will be chaperoned by SD43 teachers. If you are interested, please see Ms Kaufmann at the Career Office by November 6th, so that your name can be added to the list.

Coquitlam is allowed to send 10 students. The organizers are hoping to have at least one student from each Coquitlam school. You should here back from Ms Nembhard on Monday, November 9. If you are selected, she will also send you the permission form.

Join the UBC Engineering Virtual Program Fair on Friday, November 6, 6-8 pm, to learn more about our 14 undergraduate engineering programs. Taste of LFS is a week‑long virtual open house designed for prospective students, their families, and high school staff. Consider attending what this small and friendly faculty is all about. The series features General LFS Information Sessions plus program-specific “Deep Dives” into Applied Biology (APBI), Food, Nutrition & Health (FNH), and Food & Resource Economics (FRE) (our three direct‑entry degree programs from high school). Hosted just before UBC’s early admission deadline (Monday, December 1), these sessions are an excellent way for students to explore programs, ask questions, and connect their interests to the opportunities available in LFS.

Creative and Portfolio Day is an opportunity to get advice on preparing an entrance portfolio, or to receive pre-approval for the portfolio requirement for the Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

Led by professors from the program, these events provide the chance to learn more about our studio spaces, as well as the opportunity for prospective visual arts applicants to receive advice on assembling their entrance portfolio and/or obtain pre-approval for the portfolio requirement as part of their application to the program.

Prospective students will take a tour of the studio classrooms and explore the working spaces used by students in visual arts, media studies, and theatre. You’ll also learn more about the application process, portfolio requirements for the BFA program, and have the chance to ask questions. Each participant will be assigned a 20-minute timeslot to present their work to our program coordinator, receive feedback on their portfolio, and the chance for early approval. Register here.
