Reading is a beautiful thing...today, everyday!
Tuesday October 23 is Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R) Day. Last year over 70, 000 students across BC participate. Students can wear their pj’s and bring their favourite stuffed animal, pillow or whatever and their favourite book, magazine, comic or whatever! We are going to hunker down in the gym from 11:40-12:00 to Drop Everything And Read!
Students become proficient readers by reading constantly. Since the idea behind D.E.A.R. is to show students that pleasure reading is something valued by all and it is important for young people to witness adults modeling the importance of reading, all staff will be reading and local, school board representatives, Express Hockey players and other distinguished visitors have been invited to join us.
You can help your child by doing D.E.A.R. at home, as a family, everyday so they can see that you value reading as well. Instead of setting a time like 6:00pm, it may work best to have a regular routine of “after the dishes are done” or “after you get your pj’s on.” D.E.A.R. at school and home can work together in demonstrating the joy that reading can bring and developing lifelong readers and learners.
