Summit Middle School has a large and active music program that includes two large Concert Bands (Beginning and Intermediate/Advanced), a Jazz Band, and Music Explorations Classes. Music Explorations include such units as guitar, world instruments, music history, African drumming, Orff (xylophones, etc.), recorders, and computer music. In band, members perform in several events throughout the year, including: school concerts, assemblies, district band days, and music festivals.
The Beginner Band is for students who want to learn a new instrument in a band atmosphere. We practice Mondays and Thursdays before school at 7:45am to 8:30am. We explore how to play their instrument of choice, discuss maintenance and care, and learn how to read introductory level music. The program is great for students to develop their musical skills and to contribute to a team of musicians who all share the love of music.
Our first performance will be on October 22nd at the annual "Squeak and Squawk" Music Concert at 7pm. We invite you to come and listen to the progress the Beginner Band had made in their first month of playing!
The Advanced Concert Band is for students with at least one or two years of playing experience on a band (or string) instrument. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays and Fridays at 7:45AM. Regular and punctual attendance, as well as a commitment to the program for the year, is very important. The band will perform at school and District concerts and events throughout the year.
As with the Beginner Band, students receive a report card at the end of each term.
Jazz Band, an extra-curricular "big band" jazz ensemble, is for advanced saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and rhythm section (bass, drums, piano and guitar) players. Auditions and rehearsals will begin in October (to be announced).
