In anticipation of report cards coming home on Thursday December 5th, we felt it was important to clarify the proficiency
scale language, as this is still new for many parents and students.
Students at Summit do not receive letter grades on
their report cards, and it is crucial to understand that the proficiency scale
is NOT something that can be ‘translated’ into letter grades. For
instance, if a student is DEVELOPING in a subject area, this does not
mean they have a C+ or B. Likewise, an EXTENDING does not mean a student
has an A that subject.
Instead, the proficiency scale language means the
following:
EMERGING | The student demonstrates an
initial understanding of the concepts and competencies in relation to the
expected learning - The student is building on
the foundational skills and strategies needed to explore concepts in a
subject area
|
DEVELOPING | The student demonstrates a
partial understanding of the concepts and competencies in relation to the
expected learning - The student is still learning
about the concepts, and is beginning to apply the skills and strategies
they are learning
- They may be starting to show
understanding, but they are not consistent, or still require some support
|
PROFICIENT | The student demonstrates a
complete understanding of the concepts and competencies in relation to the
expected learning - The student can confidently,
consistently and independently demonstrate the skills and strategies
being explored
|
EXTENDING | The student demonstrates a
sophisticated understanding of the concepts and competencies in relation
to the expected learning - The student has already shown
that they are able to confidently, consistently and independently
demonstrate the skills and strategies
- The student is now trying
different ways to explore the concepts such as:
- making connections between
subject areas
- applying ideas differently
beyond the school setting
- trying different strategies
for exploring more challenging concepts relating to the learning goals
- (this does not mean students
are moving on to the learning goals of the next grade)
|
Please
keep in mind that it is only the end of term 1 and some students are still
developing their understanding of new concepts, as well as their ability to
confidently, consistently and independently apply the skills and strategies we
have been exploring in all subject areas. Receiving DEVELOPING is not
necessarily cause for concern; rather, parents should take time to sit with
their child and look through the feedback and assessments they have received on
OneNote to better understand their specific strengths and stretches. By taking
time to reflect on their previous work in this way, students will recognize
their areas of growth and how they can continue to improve as a learner.
If you
have further questions, please feel free to contact your child’s core teacher –
we will be happy to help you better understand the proficiency scale language.
Thank
you for your continued support!
