Dear Baker Drive Community,
On Thursday, September 19th at 11:16am, the Cops for Cancer Tour De Coast will be visiting Baker Drive Elementary School. This is an especially important event for our school community and for one of our grade 5 students, Eric Wagner.
As you may know, Eric has been bravely facing cancer since 2022. It's been a journey filled with many challenges, but also moments of gratitude, including the support of our school community.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we come together to recognize the brave children fighting cancer and raise awareness about the urgent need for more research. In fact, only 7% of cancer research funding in Canada is allocated to pediatric cancer. This is a staggering statistic considering that cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease in children.
This month, our community has a special opportunity to make a real difference by supporting the Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast, a cycling event where law enforcement and emergency services personnel ride to raise funds for childhood cancer research and programs that directly benefit kids like Eric.
Eric requested that the Cops for Cancer visit Baker Drive during the Tour De Coast event and they were happy to oblige!
In support of this special event to raise funds and awareness, all classes will assemble outside of the school along Baker Drive to welcome and cheer on the riders. Furthermore, we are asking for financial donations from our community. Any amount, large or small, will go a long way in helping fund:
On Thursday, September 18th, both students and families are invited to attend the Baker Drive Open House from 5:00pm to 6:00pm. The purpose of the Open House is to welcome all families into our school, introduce staff members, meet your child's teacher(s) and tour the school.
The event will begin in our school gymnasium at 5:00pm with a short welcome speech by Mr. Jamieson as well as an introduction to all Baker Drive Staff Members. At 5:10pm, families will be able to leave the gym and make their way to their child's classroom or tour the school. The event will conclude at 6:00pm.
As a reminder, an Open House is a great opportunity to meet your child's teacher and often parents and guardians choose to have conversations about how their child is doing so far during the school year. These conversations should take place in private! Please save these conversations for a conference opportunity which will take place in October. If you do have a concern or question about your child, please connect with your child's teacher by email.
We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 18th.
