Student Laptop Requirements (1-to-1 Program)

Laptop (1-to-1 Program)

Why Bring a Device?

Providing every student with access to a personal device opens the door to powerful learning opportunities. Research consistently shows that when students can use technology directly in the classroom, they gain skills, independence, and confidence that far outweigh the perceived risks. At Gleneagle, all Grade 9 students use their devices as part of our Digital Literacy program. This course helps students build essential skills for learning, communication, and responsible digital citizenship. Families can click the link on our website to view sample assignments and learn more about how devices support student learning.

Device Requirements

To ensure students can fully participate in the 1-to-1 program, devices must meet the following minimum requirements:

  1. Minimum 10-inch screen
  2. Minimum 8-hour battery life
  3. Physical keyboard (built-in or attached)
  4. WiFi access
  5. Current operating system in good standing.
    1. MacOS 12.3+
    2. Windows 10 or 11 (not Windows 10-S)
    3. Chromebooks must support the latest updates and be able to run Office 365 for Android apps from the Google Play Store

Recommended Features

These features are not required but will improve the student experience:

  1. Built-in camera/webcam
  2. Minimum 16GB internal storage
  3. Protective case
  4. Ability to work offline

Additional Considerations

  1. Touchscreen with stylus – helpful for students who prefer handwritten notes
  2. Lightweight design – students bring their device to and from school daily
  3. 13-inch or smaller – larger or gaming-style laptops are heavy and often don’t fit in backpacks

Important Note:

Students have experienced significant issues using older Chromebooks (pre‑2017 models with Celeron or MediaTek processors) and iPads. These devices often struggle with our network and Office 365 tools. The Digital Literacy team does not recommend purchasing these budget devices for the 1-to-1 program.

Examples of Acceptable and Unacceptable Devices

Acceptable for 1-to-1

  2. Chromebook (meeting requirements above)

Not Acceptable for 1-to-1
