Welcome to the first Friday Frenzy of the year! The Friday Frenzy is a weekly email that we
send out to provide information to parents.
I used to do a monthly newsletter, but I found that the information was
outdated by the time you received it. I
find that a weekly email will provide you with more relevant news and updates.
>
>
>
> Our opening week theme this week was based on the
First People’s story of the Little Hummingbird.
I’d like to thank Mrs. Charles, Ms. Howells, Mr. Dyer-Dietz, Ms. Callihoo
and Ms. Kemp for all of their work planning the events.

> Our enrollment fluctuated quite a bit during this
first week. We use this opening week to
not only build a sense of community at Walton, but to also determine our
enrollment. Over the summer families
move away or move into our catchment and we require time to process their
registration...or track them down. We
are going to begin Monday, September 9th with students returning to their
former classrooms. Please send your
child’s school supplies on Monday just in case….
>
>
>
> Remember, if your child is not here during the
opening weeks of September, I cannot guarantee them a spot at Walton...even if
you have notified me.
>

>
> Let's talk about the email. Most communication at Walton is done
electronically, whether it is email, Twitter or Freshgrade. If you change your email address, it is
important to let our office know. Again,
please consider checking our school Twitter site on a regular basis: http://www.twitter.com/@waltonsd43

> I'd like to welcome Mrs. Gibb as our new
secretary! She'll be the friendly voice
that answers the phone or greets you at the office. Mrs. Choachuy is also back as our secretary!
>
>
>
> Here are some expectations for our new families, but
also a reminder for our returning families:
>
>
>
> Cell Phones:
Students can bring cell phones to school, but they must be kept in their
backpacks during the day.
>
>
>
> Parking: The
drop off/pick up zone is reserved for daycares between 2:30-3:00pm. Parents should not be parking in the staff
parking lot. Please observe all parking
regulations in our neighbourhood.
Coquitlam By-Law will ticket illegally parked vehicles.
>
>
>
> Dogs: At this
time, dogs can come on school grounds as long as they are leashed and under
control of an adult. Dogs should be kept
back from doorways and also not be in the school. Dog owners are responsible for the actions of
their dog. Any incidents involving the
dog may result in the dog (or all dogs) being banned from school property.
>
>
>
> Visiting Walton: We do welcome parents at Walton, but we need
to balance this with safety and security of our students and staff. Parents should check in with the office when
visiting the school or even the school grounds.
Parents should not be "hanging out" in the hallways or outside
of classrooms during instruction hours as it can be a distraction.

> Missing School: What happens if your child is
absent? It is the
> parents' responsibility to inform us. The easiest way is to use our
> online reporting form. You can find this link on our school webpage:

fees. It is also the
> method for parents to complete policy forms. If you haven't done so,

us. If this is

> Superintendent Patricia Gartland’s letter to parents
about vaping products and cannabis may be found here<https://www.sd43.bc.ca/Resources/ParentResources/Documents/Superintendent%27s%20Ltr%20to%20Parents%20re%20Vapour%20and%20Cannabis%20Products%20Control%20ActSept2019final.pdf>.
>
> The use of vaping products by youth is becoming
increasingly common. There are some misconceptions about the aerosol (vapour or
cloud) produced, and currently the long-term health effects are unknown. As
caregivers, you can connect and discuss issues around vaping products with your
child. Read more here<https://www.sd43.bc.ca/Resources/ParentResources/Pages/default.aspx>.
