I hope you have a wonderful weekend! We do have a professional day on Friday, April 20th. School will be closed.
We are going to renew our Litterless Lunch practice. We are asking students to bring home their food scraps and recycling for disposal. We've noticed that students are throwing their food into the garbage. We are not supposed to do this.
Here's the background: A couple of years ago, Coquitlam started the process of having schools separate garbage, food scraps/compost and recycling. This is the same practice for your home. We found managing the food scraps from all the classrooms overwhelming. Fruit flies and bad smells permeated throughout the school.
We could not stay on top of managing the amount of food scraps and recycling at school that was generated by 550 students each day.
We began asking students to take home their food scraps for composting. This was very successful for the first year!
I'd like students to begin taking home their food scraps. Banana peels, apple cores, etc. can be brought home in a container or plastic bag for composting. I've noticed this year, that most of the food scraps is being thrown into the garbage.
Thanks for your attention to this!
We will also be revising our School Charter and focus on the Top 5 Words found in the 25 Classroom Charters. The Top 5 words are Safe, Happy, Included, Respected and Kind. We'll be focusing on one word per week, beginning with Safe.
