Update for Week of February 26-March 2nd

February 23, 2018

It looks like we’ll have a snow filled weekend!  Did you see the weather forecast? 5-10 cm on Friday and 10-15 cm on Sunday!  Please watch for updates from me on Monday regarding conditions around the school.

Thanks to Mr. Chiang for arranging the Lunar New Year Lion Dance last Tuesday.  We used a new group this year and it seemed to go well!  We had lots of parents attend and share in the experience!  Also, we are still waiting for any submissions from families that would like to share an artifact from their culture in our display case!

Our Walton Wildcat basketball season wraps up next week!  Our next home game is Wednesday, February 28th and we have a tournament on Friday at Pinetree Secondary school.  I’d like to thank Mrs. Korbely, Ms. Sedlacek, Mr. Finlay, Mr. Chiang and Mr. Hsue for coaching the team.

We’ve been focused on improving participation in Morning Fitness.  Lately, we’ve noticed that many of our students in the older grades haven’t been engaged.  That’s why we are also encouraging parents who attend to help model participation.  This Wednesday, we noticed a marked improvement in participation.  The origins of Morning Fitness goes back to having each child participate in Daily Physical Education.  Morning Fitness and Running Club supports the curriculum!   It’s also a chance to come together as a community to hear a common message!

This Wednesday, we’ll be involving our Student Council to help create a School Wide Charter.  This is part of our Social Emotional Learning goal.  Each class has developed a Class Charter.  The children in the class have worked with their teacher to create a charter specific to their classroom.  The rationale is for students to identify what makes them feel safe and happy in class so they can focus on learning.  In order to create a common language throughout the school, we’d like to identify the common words throughout the twenty-five divisions and create a School Charter for Walton.  We’ll share these words with parents too!

We’ll be revealing the common words on Wednesday, February 28th at Morning Fitness!

Walton will be hosting Ready Set Learn on Tuesday, March 6th

I have another a friendly request, and it’s not about forks and spoons.

If parents are coming on school grounds to see their child, they must check in at the front office first.  Please do not go directly to the classroom, or try to find your child outside at recess and lunch.  We’ve noticed a few parents coming on to school grounds at recess or lunch to find their child to pass on a message.  Please go to the office first.  Thanks everyone!

March is around the corner!  Our last day before Spring Break is Friday, March 16th.  We will be dismissing at our regular time at 2:45pm.

School re-opens Tuesday, April 3rd!

Please be aware of the early dismissal days in April.  We are dismissing at 1:45pm on these dates.  Mandarin Bilingual have four early dismissals.  Our Neighbourhood divisions have two.  The dates are:

·        Wednesday, April 4 (Mandarin classes only)

·        Thursday, April 5 (Mandarin and Neighbourhood)
