What is the Parent Advisory Council or PAC?
PAC is the officially recognized collective voice of parents. Every school needs to have an active PAC in order to receive government grants. PAC provides parents the opportunity to gather to discuss matters affecting the school and the education of its children. Most extra curricular activities can only happen with parent involvement. In addition, the money raised through collection and fundraising helps offset the costs to parents for things like fieldtrips and pays for fun in school speaker and entertainment activities like Art Start. Money raised also helps support the school with upgrades to school equipment and technology advancements.
PAC strives to represent the diversity within its community but can only do so with YOUR involvement!
Who Can Become a Member of PAC? WE ARE ALL PAC!! All parents and guardians of students are encouraged to participate. More hands make for lighter work! Give a little, give a lot! Either way it feels good to be involved! Whether you work full time, part-time, or are a stay at home parent it is possible to be involved in some capacity and your support makes ALL the difference. Your participation is strongly encouraged.
How Does a PAC Work? PAC communicates with the parent community via Liaison emails. If you are not receiving them, please follow up with your Class Liaison and ask to be added to the list. Our Twitter handle @IrvineSD43PAC is a handy resource as is our parent managed Facebook page offering support reminders and a forum for community Q&A. Parents are encouraged to use the official school website to stay up to date on school related events and activities. You can even connect your smart phone and receive updates too! It’s the parent’s responsibility to stay informed via all the helpful channels provided. The best way to stay updated is to attend the monthly PAC meetings with our first of the year scheduled for Wednesday, September 18th. These meetings always include informative and colourful school updates from our Principal Dennis Shannon and your PAC Executive.
A PAC has an important influence on life at school and the feelings the community has toward the school. There is strong evidence that increased parent involvement results in increased student achievement, accomplishment, satisfaction, and bonding, all of which result in decreased dropout rates, higher test scores, and nurturing better citizens of the world.
The Purpose of PAC is: • to educate parents and provide them with a better understanding of the school and its endeavours • to give input into school-based decisions and participate in goal setting • to monitor/review school rules of conduct, safety and educational programs, learning materials, & equipment • to advocate equal educational opportunities for all students • to provide methods to resolve problems between the school and community
The PAC is NOT a forum to discuss individual students and/or staff problems or conflicts.
How can you #GetInvolved? Parents have an open invitation to attend the monthly PAC meetings held on the 3rd WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH in the Library starting at 6:30pm (child minding available) to learn about upcoming plans, bring forth issues, and offer suggestions relating enhancement of our school community. If you wish to have a specific point or topic for discussion added to an upcoming PAC Meeting Agenda please email us at 027-PAC@sd43.bc.ca or seek out an Executive PAC Member to discuss further.
