Miss Ada Irvine
March 12, 1883 - February 8, 1958
Teacher and Principal in Port Coquitlam for almost 50 years .

Irvine Elementary School was opened in l969 as a Kindergarten to Grade 7 facility.  It has had up to 630 students and at one point in the late l980’s it was the largest elementary school in Coquitlam. Our school is currently a dual track Kindergarten to Grade 5 school (English and French Immersion).

École Irvine Elementary School is named after Miss Ada Irvine  and is pronounced Ervin.

Miss Ada Irvine moved to Port Coquitlam with her family when she was about 9 years old.  Port Coquitlam was formerly called Westminster Junction.  Miss Irvine started teaching around 1900 and retired shortly after World War II.

Junction School, the first school in Port Coquitlam (formerly called Westminster Junction), opened in 1892.  It was located on the corner of Wilson Street and Mary Hill Road.  The first teacher was Miss Belle Dixon.  The second teacher was Mr. R. D. Irvine (Ada’s father), who taught from 1893 to 1899.

Miss Ada Irvine became principal of Junction School in 1911. Central School opened October 1, 1914.  Miss Ada Irvine was the first principal at Central School and remained there to teach for the next thirty years.

“She was a marvelous teacher as well as a great humanitarian.  So many acts of kindness are credited to her.”

The beautiful portrait of Ada Irvine, our school's namesake, was painted by Lynn Jensen, a local artist and an Irvine parent. The additional four photos were taken during the celebration.
